Dear Everyone on LiveJournal:

Just in case it needs to be said: I don’t even understand the whole cross-posting to Facebook or Twitter thing, but I can assure you I will never intentionally cross-post one of my comments to any of your posts, whether your entry is friends-only or public.

My own LJ feeds to my FB account because I have people who read me there but not here. Only my posts feed there–none of the comments made via LJ. However, almost all of my posts are public, so if you comment here, and someone comes to my LJ, they can read your comments. But they can’t read them via FB.

For the past few days, I disabled comments on several of my posts because I was ill and wouldn’t have had the energy to respond to comments. Normally, anyone is welcome to comment any time–anonymously or otherwise–with the understanding that I reserve the right to delete or hide comments that might be either hurtful or not for some of the young eyes who read here.

Also, in my comments, if you ever use the “c” word to insult any woman or the “other ‘f’ ” word about any gay person, that’s an automatic delete from my LJ and pretty much from my esteem.

  1. Glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t understand the cross posting thing – thought I must be a bit backward/stupid!

    1. I THINK I get it, but I’m not sure.

Right now, responding to you, I have the option to check boxes for FB or Twitter. And even if this entry of mine was LOCKED (Friends Only), my comment and a quote from the original post might travel over to those sites if I click either or both of those boxes.

For people who keep their entire journals friends-only, that’s a terrible feature. Lots of people journal freely about their work and personal lives because they have a trusted friends’ list. You can imagine the possible consequences if their stuff starts showing up all over Twitter and Facebook.

      1. I think the reason why people are confused is that this whole feature is so mind-numbingly bizarre . . . at least when it comes to locked entries. It seems so obviously axiomatic that you would not put a crossposting feature for an entry that is locked by the person who wrote it. It seems like if LJ had been thinking a bit more clearly, they would have written this feature so that it did not even show up as an option in locked entries!

  2. Oh well that sucks! I use my journal to vent, often about work, and my boss is a friend on fb. Will have to just keep an eye on fb I guess to make sure nothing pops up that shouldn’t. Stupid Livejournal.

  3. PS that was my post – the first one that came out anonymous. Didn’t realise LJ had logged me out. Actually it seems to want me to log in every time I comment. GRR…

    1. Well, if you comment on other people’s LJ anonymously, that’ll keep you out of trouble if something sneaks over to FB.

This is something LJ needs to fix. You should be able to disable that choice on your comments, I think.

  4. Mlle. Renee and I prefer to read your posts on LJ so we can see the beautiful photos you always attach.

Just read your WHAT AM I DOING… block — you can’t blame me this time … though I could eat about a half dozen White Castles myself right now.

    Hope you’re feeling better.

    1. Thank you!

And I could have eaten the Krystal version of your White Castles. Though probably not half a dozen. I just drank my water and went to bed.
