LJ Runway Monday: Race to the Finish (PR 8:9)

Heidi: On the most recent episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway, the designers were asked to create a high fashion look and a ready-to-wear companion to appear in a L’Oréal Paris ad.

Barbie: The designers could make choices from themes based on L’Oréal’s new eyeshadow palettes: bright, matte, metallic, crystal, and velvet.

Summer: After Tim Gunn warned the designers that velvet would be the most challenging, of course I picked it for Becks.

Barbie: And I picked Noelle to wear velvet, because she’s definitely a high-fashion model. Then I chose Cari to model Becks’ daytime look.

Heidi: Speaking of looks, earlier in the week, I ordered more glam looks for Barbie, Summer, and me from Becks. This is what she delivered.

Barbie: I’m happy!

Summer: Me, too.

Heidi: It could have been shorter. Now let’s see if Becks can make L’Oréal happy.

She wore blue velvet.

A close-up shows the beading Becks used on the shoulder straps and earrings.

Remember these little flowers shaped from sequins on the velvet.

A great silhouette from all sides.

For a daytime look, Becks held onto the dark blue, with ivory flowers splashed across the dress.

She then used a belt that would imitate the beading details of her runway look.

And she styled Cari a little more playfully.

See you next time—

Happy birthday to Y&R writer and PR viewer Tom Casiello!
The doll Cari is a gift from (and named for) Cari.
Barbie’s and Cari’s belts are from High Fashion trims.
Summer’s necklace and Noelle’s earrings were designed by me.

  1. Gorgoeus … better then most of the gross that was on the runway this week – and especially better then this weeks velvet. Although, I would have loved for you to make red velvet cake. MMM … I like both looks …I thought the 2nd look is very fun and retro … and the styling perfect! I love Summer’s dress… she looks great in purple sequins!

    1. Thank you. I didn’t like Gretchen’s dress, either, and I usually kind of dig velvety-granola clothes. I REALLY didn’t like her ready-to-wear. I’m entrenched in Mondo’s court right now.

  2. It’s too bad you couldn’t have costumed The Poptarts!
Of course, we were a little bigger than Barbie and
her cohorts, but the clothes would have been perfect!

    1. Thanks! How great would it be to shop vintage to style a 1960s retro group? (With someone else’s money!)

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to sew real-scale; 1:6 seems to be my limit.

    1. And if you’re talking about the sequins on the velvet, I didn’t do that, either. Also, my sewing machine will NOT sew velvet. I begged, but it was adamant.

  3. You are fantastically talented.

    Both designs are terrific.
I do, especially, love the daytime design.
    Cari looks marvelous.

You take excellent care of her and spoil her, so much.

I so enjoy seeing your photographs.
    🙂

  4. Just got done watching this episode. Loved how when they had Ivy, Valerie & Michael C up there, they said Michael’s dresses were the only well-constructed & sewn pieces out of the 3 of them (since Ivy’s such a bitch to him).

I love both of your looks. I really think they are well-executed & would work in the same collection. I like the way you used the beaded belt on the ready-to-wear look to tie it to the Couture look.
    Magnifique!

    1. Thank you very much! I don’t even know if I like Michael C and his designs or not, because I get so annoyed with the way Ivy, Valerie, and Gretchen pick him apart and belittle him that I automatically want him to do well.

I’ve got all this season’s models in their designs lined up on a desk in another room, and every time I go in there, it’s the velvet gown that catches my eye and makes me the happiest. It’s so simple, but I love the lines of it.
