LJ Runway Monday: Sew Much Pressure (PR 7:11)

On the most recent episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway, Heidi Klum told the designers that she was glad she wasn’t in their shoes. Their assignment was to create a red carpet look for a celebrity who was known to be very demanding and sometimes difficult–Heidi herself!

I’ve designed for Heidi more than I’ve designed for Summer this season, but I thought I’d give it another shot. Once again, Summer’s agent told me that my favorite model wasn’t available for booking. In the agent’s words, “Summer will be rolling with the Easter Bunny-in-Chief this weekend.” I’m not certain what that means, but I am sure she’ll look fantastic doing it.

Heidi happily agreed to model for me once again. She’s a trooper. Or else she’s just glad I didn’t decide to not finish the season. That’s not a criticism of the designer who left the show. If she didn’t feel driven to complete the season, and especially if she wasn’t certain her work was at a point to show at Bryant Park, she did the right thing. It worked out well for Anthony.

So how did this week’s challenge work out for me?

I chose a flocked blue taffeta for the dress.

The embellishment on one shoulder is a cut-out from the dress fabric.

I’ve used blue for Heidi before, but the more subdued shimmer of this fabric was red carpet-ready.
She has the perfect figure for this silhouette.

A close-up of the back to show another cut-out embellishment.

The pattern of the dress has just enough detail; elaborate shoes or jewelry beyond her earrings would only be distractions.

See you next time on the runway!

  1. Easily one of my favorite dresses! I love what you did with the applique! And to continue on the back … I LOVE it. This really has been your season. I think Heidi would really love it.

    1. Thank you so much. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed this season–what is there, one more challenge before final collection? My final collection is going to be far less ambitious than last season’s, but it’s not without its wonders.

That’s all I’m saying about it.

  2. I have to sgaree with Marika that this is definitely your season. I have often loved your stuf f more thananything on the show. This is probably one of my favorites among your more formal looks. That color is beautiful. The lines work perfectly. That back shoulder was a great surprise!

While I really liked Mya and thought she would eventually be one of the top three, I was kind of glad that Anthony came back, expecially since he did so with a win. I’m realy ready for Mila to go. Her repeated color blocking is getting old.

    1. Thanks, Gary. I’ve enjoyed this season so much more than last time.

I was excited for Anthony, too. And I’m over Mila. But I’m also over Emilio, and he appears to be headed for the final three.

      1. I wasn’t going to say it, but since you opened that can of worms. I can’t stand eithe rof them, bu tlike you,I’m pretty sure Emilio is headed to the final three, along with Jay and Seth Aaron. I really liked Emilio at the beginning, though. I’m pulling for Jay among those three.

        1. I like both Jay and Seth Aaron–their work and their enthusiasm. Some of Emilio’s wins have baffled me, but mostly I’ve come to dislike his behavior.

I liked Mila’s work at first. I think maybe the show’s pace has sapped her stamina and clouded her judgment.

Anthony is so much fun–could he put together a full, cohesive collection? Not sure.

  3. With as many outfits as they have had to design for Heidi, I can’t help but wonder if Project Runway has become less about a designer and more about getting Heidi free clothes.

    Awesome dress 😉

  4. I loved when Jessica Alba said to Heidi, “You have an insane body” (something like that). This would definitely be very Heidi-worthy & your styling would look fabulous on her. The gown, with the fabric choice & the cutout details, would definitely make any red carpet “best dressed” list!

I couldn’t understand Mila’s design at all for this challenge. But Anthony’s- I’m glad he came back just so I could see that design. The way he pieced the fabric gave it such great movement!

    1. Thanks for your compliments!

I thought it was exciting that Jessica Alba wanted Anthony’s dress for herself! What a way to make a comeback for Anthony. No matter what happens, he’ll have that.

  5. How do I keep missing these!?

If you had been on the real show and made the dress in Heidi’s size :>, you would have won for sure. As much as I love Emilio and Anthony AND Seth Aaron, that pattern cut away like that and over her shoulder is more creative than anything they did. Simple and sexy and elegant.

And I just went back to look– LOVE your fabric too.

    1. Thanks!

Today I was looking at some couture online. I was impressed by this brown dress when my eye was suddenly drawn to the lower left corner. The pillow fabric is very close to Heidi’s dress except the flocked pattern is much larger. Was weirdly coincidental to see it, though!
