I thought some of you might like to see the photos I submitted to the Montrose Softball League’s Pranksters Art and Photography Show “The Contemporary Woman.” The first photo, Mounted Patrol, hung in the show. It and the other two photos will be part of Pranksters’ future book compilation of the show’s works. Sales of the art and photos benefit Aids Foundation Houston – Camp Hope, Bering Omega Community Services, and Live Consortium.
I’ve also included my statements that were submitted with the photos.
As an amateur photographer, I’m more interested in composition than the technical aspects of photography, especially when the composition is unstaged. None of my subjects knew they were being photographed.
It was the job of the security guard in “Mounted Patrol” to be observant, so I had to shoot several photos quickly without drawing notice. I was really pleased that this one caught her quiet, confident strength and the trust between horse and rider.
At first I wasn’t struck by the couple in “The Seven Stages of Marriage.” It was a nice day and everything about them seemed average: He was preoccupied by his phone and she was keeping an eye on the dog. Then when I saw the title of her book (The 7 Stages of Marriage), the interpretive nuances of the scene became limited only by a viewer’s imagination, and the photo became far more interesting to me.
I liked the color contrasts in “Purple and Gold and Real,” but it also made me think that the value of fashion can be artificial. This woman, dressed comfortably and focused on her work, has an innate, natural beauty that requires nothing contrived or embellished. I think women very often have no idea how beautiful they are.

It certainly makes a person wonder what stage that couple would be in. (Or even what the stages are.)
I actually looked them up after I shot this photo. Of course, I don’t remember them, but one of them was something like the “comfortable” stage. I’m choosing to believe that (1) they are in that stage and/or (2) she’s reading the book for a class and/or (3) she’s hanging out with her brother.
I love them all , but I really like the first one best. Congrats!

Wonderful photos, Becky, and congratulations! I agree with Marika about the first one, though. We have some “mounties” here for special occasions, and I saw a few in New York too.
I have a love/hate relationship with mounted police. Or more of an admire/fear relationship, I suppose.
