It may be because those horrifyingly huge slugs are like the “state bird” of the Pacific northwest rain forest. (Like palmetto bugs are down south. *wink*) My sister told me about them after living in Oregon for a year while her husband was doing marine biology residency work on the left coast.
I’m not sure what the official disgusting critter of the northeast is. Maybe tenured professors. ;D
