Button Sunday

Last night I saw a pregnant dog off leash in the neighborhood. I circled around the block and came back to try to find her, but either she’d been called in by her person (HOPE) or she’d found a place to hide (DREAD).

I promise not to rant about everything that makes me angry about that first paragraph. There’s a wealth of information online about why spaying and neutering is the best option for animals.

To end this in a more upbeat way, here’s a photo Lindsey took with my camera last night in The Compound office of Tim holding a very, very special rescued dog, Lindsey and Rhonda’s Sugar.

jen & i were just talking the other day about how crazy expensive it is to spay/neuter an animal and how steps really need to be taken to get this cost down. or simply require that if your pet is picked up by the pound, you have to have them fixed before getting them out. maybe none of those are feasible options, but SOMETHING has got to be done about it.

as i’m sure you know, purebred dogs are prone to all sorts of medical issues and problems since it’s essentially inbreeding.

not that that’s the case for all of course, i’ve known purebreds that were the healthiest dog you’ve ever come across. i’m still partial to mutts tho. 😉

Fortunately in Houston there are low-cost places for spaying and neutering. I know that’s not the case everywhere though, which is a shame.

One of my teachers once found a dog (standard dachshund) running loose that I agreed to adopt after she searched in vain for two weeks for his home. She and her partner paid all the vet costs for his neutering and we were just waiting for him to be fully recovered before we brought him home.

Suddenly a woman showed up to claim him. She’d been out of town on business for a month, and whoever boarded her dog lost him. Needless to say, she was QUITE SHOCKED to find her dog neutered. I thought it was justice, because even if she was not present when the dog went missing, how could she not have been calling and checking on him regularly? And what kind of place boards dogs, loses them, and doesn’t ever notice the zillion “found dog” signs in the vicinity? I was just sorry my teacher had to give him back to her.

bean’s spay was a low cost one, but you have to make less than a certain amount of money to qualify to get the coupon. the have an RV low cost spay that goes around, but something about that made me nervous.

just seems to me that if people knew it wasn’t going to cost a small fortune (one place i called said it’d be $215), they’d be more likely to have it done.

i can’t believe that lady was gone for a month and didn’t know her own dog was missing… we call nearly every day when out of town even tho we know the animals are in good hands. people just amaze me…

  2. That’s a great article. Another thing to keep in mind is that having a litter can be a lot of stress and work for your pet. My poor cat is so high strung, and I’m glad now she never had a litter because she probably would have had a nervous breakdown.

      1. Thanks! I find I just can’t say no to her. I’ll wake up during the night and look over at my heat register and sure enough I’ll see my silly cat hogging the heat register while I freeze. 🙂

        1. Must have been something I ate… I’m fine. I rarely have heartburn. Probably it was actually that Coke I drank. The body always punishes our broken promises.

  3. I can remember when I took Dash in to be fixed. I nearly changed my mind because I didn’t wany him to lose his crazy personality and change into a fat lazy dog … My vet looked at me and said “Dash’s a Jack Russell, that’s not going to happen, you have a good 8 years of puppyhood to look forward to. He won’t begin to slow down till he’s about 10>” So I had it down. Now when I see a male dog that isn’t fixed I always say “Dash, aren’t you glad you don’t have to drag those things around.” They look so uncomfortable!

      1. Dash is a MONSTER Jack Russell, he’s HUGW for the breed… but his Papa was like that too… He is insane, but quite the little loverboy too. I adore him, in case you hadn’t noticed

        1. adored…as every pet should be. 😉

so dash is a little loverboy too!? how funny – romeo is SOOOO mr. sensitive and will just bend over backward to love on us.

  4. I may have mentioned this before, but once when I was walking the girls in the hood, there was a dog who was running loose–which was not unusual for this dog, but it was obviously in heat because the owners had a diaper on it. Some people are to stupid to be pet owners.

That’s for sure. I still say karma has a “special treat” in store for whoever mistreated and neglected River before he came to Tim.

  5. Ever since Sugar watched that doccumentary on the National Geographic channel, she’s terrified that the camera will steal her soul. We should really think about hiding the T.V. remote when we leave the house…

    1. Assure her that Tim is the most photographed human on The Compound and he’s loaded with soul. You can even show her Al Camino’s video.
