Sunday Night at The Compound

Reason 1,032,653 why a gay man is really a girl’s best friend:

A gay man will bedazzle the boot that you have to wear when you get a stress fracture.

That’s what Woodja did for Lindsey when she and Rhonda met their usual Sunday night dinner crew. Tom had joined Lindsey and company on Friday night for her birthday dinner, but all social engagements are off for me right now because of writing commitments. I’d asked R&L if they could stop by last night so Tim and I could join Tom in making note of Lindsey’s birthday. Also, remember the sad-eyed dog photos because The Compound Canines were missing Lindsey on her birthday.

So Lindsey got and gave some dog love.

And Rhonda in her smokin’ black leather jacket got Rex to be a good boy. (Tom is a good boy, too.)

Lindsey got some flowers, and we all got some cake. This chocolate pound cake is from a recipe that was the first thing I ever made in Home Ec (ninth grade). I tossed on a few sprinkles and some plastic balloons to make it more festive (the extra loaf in the background was for Rhonda and Lindsey to take home, because I knew they’d be stuffed after dinner out with their friends).

Thanks for coming by, Lindsey and Rhonda. It was nice celebrating another birthday with you. And thank you for the “swag bags” from your dinner party on Friday, even for those of us who couldn’t attend. =)

Meanwhile, for the TimStalkers, another look at a dog and his boy…

    1. This is the recipe halved, which will overfill a loaf pan, so I don’t know how the hell big it would be if it wasn’t halved:

      1/2 cup butter
      1/4 cup shortening
      1 and 1/2 cups sugar
      3 eggs
      1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
      1/4 tsp baking powder
      1/4 tsp salt
      2 tblsps cocoa
      1/2 cup milk
      1/2 tsp vanilla

Cream together butter and shortening. Add sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each. Add vanilla.

Sift dry ingredients together. Add dry ingredients and milk alternately to creamed mixture.

Bake in a loaf pan at 325 degrees for 45 minutes to one hour.

I use self-rising flour instead of flour/baking soda/salt (HUSH, Lynne!), and I use the butter-flavored Crisco. I also coat my loaf pan with butter-flavored Crisco and powder it with cocoa. And this always overflows my loaf pan, so I recommend placing some of the mixture in another pan. Keep an eye on it, too, because the time is never 45 minutes to an hour for me. (It’s my oven, I think.)

There is also a glaze to go with it. Though I never make that, here’s the recipe if you want it.

      1/2 cup sifted confectioner’s sugar
      dash salt
      1 and 1/2 tblsp butter
      2 to 3 tblsps milk
      1/4 tsp vanilla
      2 tblsps cocoa

Combine all ingredients in double boiler over simmering water, stir until smooth, and pour over cake.

      1. There ya go, I will leave the glaze off and tell myself how many calories I saved. LOL.

Thanks for the recipe. It actually sounds pretty easy. (which is what I was guessing since it was the first thing in Home Ec)
Now I just need an “occasion” to make it for.

  1. Rhonda looks good in that jacket with Rex at her knee. Wouldn’t mind having a photo of me, like that.

I love the song you were listening to when you wrote this, Becky. It’s untouchably perfect. The composer’s sex change is news to me, but then I’m not the best at keeping my finger on the pulse, am I?

  2. Oh looks like FUN. Rhonda is gorgeous in that jacket!

I am going to make that cake, myself. Thanks for posting the recipe for it.

I also just realized, I am a Tim stalker. I love that photo. He (and Rex) is so handsome.

Tom looks like he has a secret! I wonder what he’s thinking in that photo.

  3. Margot is so funny in that picture. Like she wants to be there, but not too close.
Rhonda’s jacket is smokin’. With matching leather pants on a harley, can’t beat the look.
How cold was it there, anyway? Everybody’s all layered up.

    1. Hmm…how about matching leather chaps on a Honda? Cuz THAT, I can do. It was in the low 40s or upper 30s, aka “the approximate temperature at which Gulf Coasters layer and wish we were in Jamaica.” 🙂

      1. HONDA! I knew you had a motorcycle, couldn’t remember what kind. Yeah, that entire combo works, too. (Especially since leather pants would probably be a little warm in your neck of the woods.) Do you have the matching leather halter top? I have a friend who has a bike, I’m always threatening to get her one.

        (Saints and Sinners……)

      2. Dammit! That was me. I don’t know what it is when I reply to you, Rhonda. It’s supposed to keep me logged in on this computer so I don’t have to sign in each time. (I’m not even bitchy this time.) 😉

        1. No…I don’t have a leather halter. That would certain scare people!

When it’s hot out, you can generally see me wearing shorts and a tank top UNDER my mesh gear. Keeps me comfy AND protected. 🙂
