New Toy at The Compound

Today, the Great New Experiment begins. It’s been, um, a long, long time since I used a crock pot, but I got one a few days ago to try out recipes from Joe Simmer (thanks, Greg). I modified one of his recipes and added some elements from another that I found online, and tonight, Tom and Tim will be the ones who endure the results when they eat the hen that I’ve already checked on TWENTY TIMES in less than an hour–leaving the lid on, however, because there are some instructions I’ll follow, though not many.

And now, I have officially become that thing FARB and millions of other people don’t want to read–someone who talks recipes and cooking on my LJ. I’d better find another hot photo of Tim in the archives…

  1. OMG I had no idea no one wanted to read about my recipes and cooking. EEK! Why didn’t someone tell me? 😛

I always love reading about people’s dishes. Like the crockpot thingy, I have only 2 recipes for it. I could buy those frozen crockpot meals, but really, what’s the fun in that?

Write away! I need recipes for my crockpot. It’s collecting dust in the closet.

    1. I love my crockpot! I had to buy a bigger one when my son reached his teenage years. I usually use it to make stew, or I throw a roast or boneless turkey breast in to slow cook. Put the ingredients for a loaf of bread in the breadmaker, and dinner is ready to go. I have to say that I tried those frozen crockpot meals, and didn’t care for them at all. They kind of have an odd taste to them for me.

        1. If you like chicken in a crockpot, try this:

3 lbs of chicken(parts or boneless breasts will work)
          1 large jar of salsa

Dump it in the crockpot for 4 hrs on high.

I serve it with refied beans and and a sweet corn pudding(which I have an easy recipe for as well). Makes a nice easy tex/mex meals

          1. MMmmm…that sounds really good!
Now, that sweet corn pudding…is that anything like corn bread with sugar in it? That’s one of Becky’s favorite foods! 😉

            1. Okay, Miss Smarty Pants, no cornbread for you!

I do wonder if this is like the recipe I got from Angry Black Bitch’s blog. It used that Jiffy cornbread mix (which is sweet, dammit!) and I don’t remember what else. Would have been fabulous, too, if not for the sweetness.

My mother used to fry corn using roasting ears, but I have never been able to adequately mimic her fried corn and I’m still baffled about what roasting ears are. (It was yellow corn. Lynne’s mom used to fry white corn, and it was delicious, too. You cut just the tips off the corn cob, then scrape a knife down it to get the milk, then fry it. Sounds easy, but I’ve never quite gotten it right.)

            2. corn pudding

              1 can cream corn
1 can regular corn (do not drain)
              1 stick butter (melted)
              1 egg
              1 box Jiffy cornbread mix

Mix all ingredients together and pour into a square baking dish. Oven
375 degrees for about 40-45 minutes.

It’s quite yummy. Enjoy!! I’m making it for the departmental Christmas party on Friday.

              1. Re: corn pudding

Yup, that’s it. I was going to try it with a different, less-sugary mix, because the Jiffy was too sweet for me. Otherwise, it was delicious.

        2. I scooped out the innards and threw them in a pan of water to boil and make broth. Then I washed and dried the whole hen, sprinkled it with salt, white pepper, and basil, put some sliced fresh garlic in the cavity, and put the hen on a bed of sliced carrots, onions, and celery. Then poured in half a cup of the broth, cooked it for four hours on high, then turned it to warm. The meat was completely moist and tender and pulled off the bone with a fork. It was great. So, first experience with the new crockpot: success!

    2. Oh, don’t worry about the people who DON’T like to read recipes. I am always looking for new things to cook or new ways to cook things. I got one of my new favorite dishes from David’s LJ. I was just making fun of myself, is all.
