Houston’s priciest taxi

Last year I had a little medical scare, and since Tom was at work, Tim took me to one of St. Luke’s emergency care places. Ultimately, they ended up transferring me to their hospital, and even with insurance, that was one of the most expensive cab rides ever.

So last night, when the over-the-counter stuff we got for Tim didn’t work, I decided to take him to another of St. Luke’s emergency care places. For one brief moment, since he has no insurance, I asked myself why not just take him straight to the hospital, just in case. However, due to my advanced medical degree (insert sarcasm), I reassured myself that he just needed some IV fluids for dehydration and something to make him stop throwing up, and they’d send him home with an antibiotic of some sort. So off we went.

He got his fluids. He got lots of anti-nausea stuff. He got his blood drawn–twice. He got his antibiotics. He got to drink gross red stuff and when he couldn’t keep it down, he got his dye another way. He got his ultrasound (he says it’s a boy).

Three hours later, I followed his expensive cab to the hospital, where they admitted him for 24 hours of observation because they couldn’t get a clear picture of his appendix. By the time I left him sleeping in his spiffy hospital gown, I was seeing double, so I crawled into bed for three hours of sleep. Tom kept all dogs away and cooked dinner. I ate, showered, and went back to the hospital. Tim looks a zillion times better, so hopefully after his surgeon reads tonight’s tests, he’ll get to come home Monday.

River is being very good, but he goes on full alert whenever he hears a door close or a car drive by. He wants Tim to come home. So do I. I did threaten to take my camera and document all this for his Live Journal, but I just couldn’t shoot a man when he was down.

  1. Oh, no! That’s too bad! So now is it going to be River’s golden liver, and Tim’s silver stomach? Lot’s of good thoughts being sent down that he gets to come home soon.

  2. Oh, I know that routine TOO well. Please send our love to Tim; and if any of you need anything, please let me or Rhonda know…we’re right around the corner.
