You write it

From this coloring book, back in April and May of 2021, I colored this page (using a photo of a particular surfer for my color choices):

Blue Sky Boy recently suggested “seaside/surfing” as a theme, so here’s another page I just colored from that book.

I didn’t write any flash fiction about it. I did find a prompt in the Write The Poem book, if you’d like to write poetry or prose using the coloring page as your subject. You can share it in comments or keep it only for yourself. In addition to the words the book provided, I’m adding: sailboats, camera, rocky coast, beach plums, and inlets. Enjoy a burst of creativity!

Abyss

I didn’t date the poem below, so I don’t know when I wrote it. Can’t even be sure what prompted it (other than its suggestion in this book). It’s possible I’ve put it on this site before without using the right tag to find it again. If I don’t remember sharing it, I feel confident no one else will, either!

I was glancing through different places where I can find poems I’ve written, including the “Write The Poem” book, and I realized how often the below phrase, taken from a source on Instagram, is true of my poetry.

“They” say real people from our lives who we write into fiction don’t recognize themselves. I think that’s possibly even truer with poetry. As a form of self-expression, we can generalize in writing things we don’t want a specific person to hear. In my case, it’s usually to express my own pain without causing pain to someone else. Sometimes, however, my lyrics may be coming from one of my characters instead of myself. There are a lot of voices in my head. That can make it tricky for readers.

I’ve known other writers who use words as weapons, most often in essays, but sometimes in their fiction and poems (songs included). How we choose to express our honesty often reveals more about the writer/speaker than the “target.”

ETA: I just learned today is National Poetry Day. Timely.

Saturday vibe

Tom cleared the space where the Christmas tree will go and brought it in from the Lean To.

When I left to run an errand (also Christmas related–picked up the stationery and envelopes for the 2023 Christmas letter), he’d started putting on the lower branches. When I got back–voila!

He paused before stringing the lights to watch the Alabama-Georgia game, which I’ve been trying not to hear–except I have the score updating on my phone, and it looks like Alabama just gave Georgia their first loss in two years. That’s the extent of football chat here on An Aries (Who Knows Some Stuff). I’d pulled up my manuscript to work on while cooking dinner, but my mind is very much elsewhere, so instead I wrote a poem.

I used a prompt from my Write The Poem book, but only used one of the suggested words because I drew words from my WoodWords set (made by the same company who’s brought us Magnetic Poetry for all these years). I think I was true to the spirit of the prompt, however.

Here’s the poem.

Now hoping to work on the novel. I’ll add my writing music playlist later.

Some things…

I got rid of another stack (nine inches high!) of work documents. I feel lighter and get to recycle paper this way.

This is my big desk where I’m not working right now. I think I’ll be more inclined to return when I get rid of the rest of the records and paperwork from my old job. It’ll be a fresh start! I do miss my wallpaper with my pretty pictures of 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. =)

I wrote another poem with a prompt from this book the other day. It may not be readable on this picture. Doesn’t matter.
