For Lisa

I wanted to thank you for all the photos you’ve been posting. =) I’m glad you found MISADVENTURES IN THE (213) and hope you enjoy it. Tim loaned me his to read many years ago, but sadly, I didn’t have my own copy when we met Dennis when he was promoting SCREENING PARTY. Later, I scored a hard cover, but it’s not quite as special to me as this one Jim sent me:

Jim did a signing around the time HE’S THE ONE came out with Dennis, Dave Benbow, and Gregory Hinton. Since I know you love photos, I’m providing a few behind a cut.

Jim with Dennis.

Gregory Hinton’s CATHEDRAL CITY on the left, Dennis’s books and ours, and on the right, SUMMER SHARE featuring stories from Chris Kenry, William J. Mann, Andy Schell, and Ben Tyler, and Ben Tyler’s TRICKS OF THE TRADE. Ben was supposed to be at the signing, but he had an emergency and couldn’t make it.

Dave and Gregory behind Jim and Dennis.

Q&A with the authors, always my favorite part of a signing.

I love authors and their signed books. =)

  1. I like Dennis Hensely’s handwriting.

At a Q & A, have the people who ask you questions already read your book, even though it’s new? Or are they totally unfamiliar with you and your writing, and like just wandered in off the street?

    1. In our case, most people have not already read whatever book is new that we’re promoting. Most of the people who come to our signings have read our other books or are friends and acquaintances. The “stranger off the street” was more likely to happen at GLBT bookstores. Now that those are gone in Houston, we occasionally get curious cutomers who just happen to be in the bookstore, but in a niche market, that’s much rarer. When we did our signing at a bar with Greg, Lindsey and Rhonda got a lot of new people to come, which was great. But there was no Q&A there, just gin and tonics and such.

  2. “Screening Party” was one of my fave books, ever. It inspired us to try it ourselves, which was how I met . After that, we had one or two more that I wrote up, and about two more movies we watched for which I took notes before it sort of disbanded. It was a lot of fun…

    1. THANK YOU for the links to those posts. I went and read them all. Splendid! They would have meant more if I’d seen the movies, but… having read your screening party group’s reactions, I’m so grateful I haven’t seen the movies.

And that’s WONDERFUL that you and Dan met that way. One day when you meet Dennis Hensley, if you haven’t already, you’ll have to tell him that in his own way, he made you a married man.

  3. Thanks for the pids, Becky. It’ makes me anxious for the Midwest Author’s Tour. 😉
It’s thanks to your recommendation that I bought/read Screening Party which I enjoyed so much. I’m looking forward to starting this next one–when I’m done obsessing about what wildflower book I can find to buy.

  4. (Hey, on your Photo Friday…I bet you just squealed when you saw you’d get a chance to post that sleeping beauty Naked Tim pic after all, now didn’t you?) (Woof!!!)

    1. I know you’ll think I’m nuts, but that was actually really difficult to do. Seriously. I went back and forth so many times over the past couple of weeks even though I had Tim’s permission to post it. Finally I decided I wouldn’t. My reasoning was (1) I didn’t ask to take the photo, (2) even I have my limits of exploiting Tim, and (3) there are moments within friendship that are private, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to give that moment to the world.

THEN Photo Friday used the “Dream” theme. I went slithering over to Tim’s apartment, and when Rex couldn’t kill me with the hoe, Tim again said it was okay. So I did it. And I do think it’s a beautiful photo of him.

      1. No, I don’t think you’re nuts. I was just kinda hassling you. Sorry.
I can see where it would have been difficult to decide to post it. A picture of someone sleeping–especially in a bed as opposed to on the couch or something–is often a private and/or intimate moment. And given the fact that it was for Photo Friday, and not just for us on LJ, a whole bunch of people who know nothing about Tim saw that captured moment. I would have had a hard time deciding, too. But I agree that it’s a beautiful photo.

        1. Oh, I didn’t think you were hassling me. I mean… all else aside? HELL YES I think it’s hot! But I vow not to start a Sleeping is HOT! campaign.

          Maybe.

      2. *raises hand*

Um, excuse me? A few of us in the back row (okay, just me) are a bit confused. I thought “Photo Friday” (like “Button Sunday,”) was something you created for your LJ, but now it sounds like there’s a Photo Friday Club or something. Did I miss something? (I know what you’re going to say, no daydreaming in class! But look at how many hot guys there are in here! I’m only human!) Thank you.

        1. There’s a Photo Friday site, to which people from all over the world submit photographs. The week’s “theme” usually shows up around midnight my time on Thursday night (I check the site, and also have it e-mailed to me).

Some of the photographs submitted to the site are remarkable works of art. Others, like mine, are from people who like to take photos that match the theme of the week, but aren’t photographers so much as hobbyists.

In every one of my Photo Friday posts, there’s this link, and “Photo Friday Weekly Challenge” is also a link in my sidebar under Photography.

Every week, several photos are selected as “Noteworthy” from the previous week’s submissions. These are entered by people who visit the Photo Friday site, and some of the photos you can see there are breathtaking.

Because I get a lot of hits on my Photo Friday posts, I disable comments and don’t put a mood or a music entry. I assume most people are like me and quickly click through submissions from the Photo Friday site. Often, a photo will intrigue me enough to explore the person’s web site or blog. This is a way for me to find great photos (I also do searches on Flickr and find stunning photos that way), and sometimes really interesting people whose blogs I enjoy reading.

Of course, I also hope that some people who visit my LJ and see our book covers in my sidebar might become new readers. =)

          1. P.S. Button Sunday, however, is all mine, as far as I know. Inspired by an e-mail sent by my friend Denece, and also since we were wee girls, my friend Lynne and I have collected buttons. I haven’t used but a couple of my personal buttons on the posts, however; I get them from the Internet.

      3. The photo is like “WOW!” but I can totally understand your conflict. An ex once took a pic of me sleeping that I would NEVER have allowed him to take if I was awake. I was really kind of freaked out when he showed it to me.

      4. I was speechless when I first saw that photo. From the lighting to the way his arm is positioned, it’s sublime and perfectly captures a mood. Well done!
