They FREAK me out. I never saw one until I moved to Texas. I was getting ready for school one morning and had to feed the cats. They were outdoor cats, and it was still dark outside. I opened the back door and saw this creepy white face staring up at me from the cat’s food dish.
I was convinced it was some kind of ghost animal, which is stupid because I was in like 7th grade. It totally freaked me out, and I still don’t like them.
Where did you live before that you didn’t see possums? We have tons of them in New England (specifically suburban Massachusetts). They are prime road kill here along with raccoons, skunks, and gray squirrels. We also have foxes and eastern coyotes thriving happily in the suburbs. 🙂 The coyotes eat a lot of cats, sorry to say. Poor Mittens and Mr. Fluffybottom. 🙁 The eastern coyotes look like skinny German shepherd dogs, long legged with nice plumed tails.
‘Possums wander across our backyard wall every night. No big deal. They kind of make me laugh because when they see us, they do that deer in the headlights thing, but eventually get over it and mosey along. BUT, last winter I went into the garage at night and a ‘possum ran over my bare foot. ‘Possum fur is coarse, and their feet are scaly. I think neighbors could hear me shrieking four blocks away.
My mother used to put popcorn on the picnic table for
the raccoon family that lived in our backyard. One
night we heard this horrible screaming and turned on
the back lights. On top of the picnic was the big
daddy raccoon and across from him was a big possum,
hissing. They both wanted the popcorn!
My mother started yelling that there was a big rat on
the picnic table. I got a broom and, like an idiot,
went out to chase them away. The raccoon took off,
but the possum kept hissing at me. Finally he gave
me a disgusted look and ambled off.
butterflies have the nerve to touch me and i do not care for that. possums don’t touch me, but they stare at you all creepy with their beady little eyes.
Dash LOVES to kill them! Or at least I think he would, I’ve never let him catch one. he recently got a mouse though. I love living with a hunter.
Rex killed a baby possum. I’m sure Dash would, too, given the chance.
You saw mine on Tim’s post. UGH!!
In a sea of glittery fairy princesses with fancy names online, I wanted to present the most unromanticized counter-image possible.
Possums were perfect, and I am their queen. 😉 Yee-Haw!
It’s a noble title.

I lived in Delaware, and had never seen one.
Did it hiss at you?
I don’t think I gave it long enough to hiss at me. I saw it, and ran right back in the house as fast as I could!

EEEEEK! I don’t mind them. But I don’t want them running over my bare feet, either.

The hissing is the worst part. However, he’s lucky, because a raccoon can put up a hell of a fight.
ew, i hate them.
they make roxee crazy too!
Okay–which is worse on the Jandy scale? Butterflies or possums?
AHHAHA
it’s close.

butterflies are at least pretty…from far away. 😉
