Do you remember the early years of MTV when they actually showed videos all the time? Watching it with friends and making comments in that Beavis and Butt-Head way? Waiting for that ONE video you wanted to see, even if it meant losing sleep or not leaving the house? Actually knowing when a favorite artist’s video was going to debut and making a point of being there?
I was curious about when I could actually see videos on MTV. Here’s today’s schedule.
From 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., I could have watched Next.
From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., I could have watched The Hills.
From 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., they’ll be showing episodes of Season 4 of “America’s Next Top Model.” (The show is about to begin its ninth season on The CW network.)
From 9 p.m. until 10 p.m., I could watch MTV Cribs.
From 10 p.m. until 11 p.m., I could catch two episodes of Pimp My Ride.
From 11 p.m. until midnight, I could see High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks & Controversies.
Just in case I missed “The Hills” earlier, those episodes repeat from midnight until 1 a.m.
Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County is on from 1 a.m. until 1:30 a.m., at which time I could see Real World: Sydney.
Four episodes of MTV Exposed air until 4 a.m., when I could catch Cable in the Classroom.
And then, at last! From 4:30 a.m. until 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, I could sleep through some music videos.
What’s your favorite all-time music video?
I love so many, but this one helped me at a time when I needed it.
I know this song, but never saw the video. While I was watching, I was totally thinking of WHEN YOU DON’T SEE ME. (When you read it, you’ll understand.) So I went to do a little investigating about the song and the Verve. I had no idea they’d been sued by the Rolling Stones for sampling from them in this song. They’ve never made a dime in royalties because of that suit. I suppose I have to side with the Stones–artists’ copyrights and all, and apparently the Verve were warned ahead of time not to use the sample–but damn. Talk about the big guys going after the little guys.
Rhonda and I would like to place a vote for this:
Also? He’s wearing a button for Button Sunday! We would both like to know what that button says.
I’m guessing it could be something like this:
Do you know how many times I’ve said
‘Cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance Well they’re no friends of mine
I hate the video … but I owe MWH a debt!
Yeah, I always thought Ivan was cute, too. Even if he couldn’t dance.
Oh, when we were watching this I said, “Man, I forgot how hot he was…”
as i’m sure everyone will mention, there are TONS of videos that i think are great, but the first few that came to mind were:
– nirvana’s ‘in bloom’ & ‘smells like teen spirit’
– garbage’s ‘the world is not enough’ & ‘androgyny’
– no doubt’s ‘it’s my life ‘cover
Now I need to go and watch all those again. =)
Waaaaaayyyyy back when I lived in Wyoming, MTV was about all that I would watch. I think that my favorite would be Don Henley and Boys of Summer. I love the aura of it.
Ohhh, I agree. Good song, good video.
Funny, Becky. I was thinking about this very same thing earlietr this week. With summer school over and only one day atthe store, I’ve found myself flipping through the channels off and on throughout the day. Everytime, no matter what time if day or day of the week, I have never seen an actual video on MTV and very rarely even on VH1. I’ve heard they are all played on MTV 2, which I don’t get. I’ll have to think aout which is my fave and post it later.
Oooo, MTV2
My husband just had one of our TV’s hooked up to DirectTV (so he could watch baseball 24 hours a day if he desires) and I think it has that on it. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks, Gary! I was just thinking with watching everybody’s favorite videos that it’s too bad there isn’t some channel that plays 80’s videos, since 80’s music is kinda coming back in popularity. I love watching them, and have kind of forgotten about many of these and how I enjoyed them.
You’re quite welcome, Lisa.
That’s a tough one. Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” is a pretty memorable video, (and the two videos I remember the most from the 80’s are “We are the World” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,”) but if I have to pick one I think I’ll choose A-Ha’s “Take on Me.”
I always loved that video. =)
ooooooh I forgot about that one. I loved it.
The girl in this video is the girl in my video … but she’s way sleezier in mine. Go figure
What ever became of A-Ha? I used to enjoy them. I actually borrowed the animation effects from this video for a shoe commercial I wrote. It was never produced.
Do you remember the early years of MTV when they actually showed videos all the time?
The first time I remember seeing MTV was in 1983 at my friend David’s house. His dad’s business was really beginning to take off at that time and he had all this stuff that nobody else in our working class neighborhood had . . . including cable! Anyway, I do seem to remember them playing a lot of videos. Even in the early nineties when I finally got cable, I seem to remember them playing more videos than they do know although all these non-musical programming was starting to rear its ugly head (“The Real World”).
The other day, I was watching Mad TV and they did a hilarious skit about how MTV is no longer about music:
As Tim might say, “It’s funny ’cause it’s true.”
I thought it was Karen Walker who said that? LOL
She stole it from Tim. (I’m glad Tim doesn’t usually go deeply into my comments for reading material since you’re invoking that show he calls “Will and Hag.”)
Oops… feel free to delete it. LOL
Never! heh
Could this be why MTV doesn’t play videos anymore?
Oskar LeChat gives this vid two paws down for defamation of animals And whatever happened to Adam.
Dash votes two paws down, an says its a purr-fect cat-astrophe. Adam is no GOODY TWO SHOES, he pulled a gun on three people in a pub andwas diagnosed with some sort of mental illness afterwards.
He’s such a baby in this video.
I know, and so harmless… One would never guess he was a homicidal nut job
Wait, what? Who? I can’t keep up with what answers are going where. I was talking about baby Michael. Adam’s the homicidal nut job, right?
Yes Adam is the homicidal nut job .. although to be fair, Michael was either self-homicidal or auto-homicidal… depending on what you believe
It’s so mean that I laughed at this comment.
Yes Becks, it IS mean. Wretched girl!
I love this entry. You made me remember how much I used to love MTV. : )
I got carried away with MTV memories that got so long you’ll have to go HERE to see it.
They actually didn’t have the original music video of my favorite, so I’ll leave you with my second favorite.
I forgot to add, 20-years later Cyndi still rocks and rules!
I always liked this video, too. It may be my favorite of hers.
it’s really hard to pick one..but this one may well be it:
