Where have all the flowers gone…

As I mentioned, on Wednesday morning, the first thing I did was go to the cemetery. The reason for this is that I don’t get a chance to visit my father’s grave often, since I rarely return to Alabama.

I took this photo:

And pulled that weed, by the way. After sitting there a while, then doing the nostalgia tour, I picked up some roses. These are not the flowers we’ll be using at my mother’s memorial service. They were just a gift from me to my father.

Thursday afternoon, after my sister got here, we went out to the cemetery.

Someone had stolen the roses, vase and all.

    1. Do you think someone actually made a gift of roses from the grave of a soldier? Do you suppose that person has a “Support Our Troops!” bumper sticker?

  1. That is one of the reasons we quit putting anything special on my mother and father’s graves in J’ville. Every thing was getting stolen. For a while it was supposedly some the florists in the area. They were stealing them and reusing them.

    PEOPLE SUCK

    1. The weird thing is–who goes out there? I mean, there are so few graves, they are rarely visited, and now that the two gates closest to the cemetery are closed, it’s remote and difficult to get to. I put them out in the afternoon, and Tom and I went back late evening and they were still there. So it either happened after dark Weds or sometime Thurs morning. The flowers I left on DK’s parents’ graves were still there, at least.

  2. Wow: your dad served in three wars. Thank you, Mr. Cochrane for your service to your country. It sounds like you had terrific parents. Good luck with your mom’s memorial.

Yeah, that’s pretty ghoulish behavior. Crimes that involve messing with graves in any matter should come with very stiff sentences.

  3. That’s majorly F’d up. Here’s hoping that person’s conscience beats them up more than we ever could…
But should you need the back-up, remember Tim has a glock and I have a ninja outfit.

      1. Hahahahahaaa! Did you put a wire tap on our phone conversation this morning? You have no idea (or, perhaps maybe you do) how close we were to getting on the road. Since you didn’t actually have a perpetrator in mind/hand, she managed to calm down (only) just a little bit. However: you know that all you have to do is say the word, and we’re there. No matter the reason.

      2. Just tell me this: How in the HELL can you read me so well ???
Do you have my cell phone bugged???? When Lindsey told me what happened I was ready to ditch work and head to you ASAP …. It floors me that people can be so F’ed up to do something like that. The flowers were beautiful and if we want to find a ” positive ” side to look at this …. whomever stole them has great taste … but my “evil side” wants to send the photo to the local newspaper and tell them the story …. I guess it’s a good thing that I’m not that evil …. If you need me, I can be on the road in 45 minutes 🙂 …. Have new truck will travel …. or I am SURE that my ” MISTRESSES ” will take take me to the airport. I can miss work if needed and you MY FRIEND are worth missing work for. Love , Kathy

  4. That’s horrible. Maybe it was kids from the area causing mischief? You’d hate to believe it was some seemingly respectable member of society, but chances are it probably was. Stealing flowers from a grave is right up there with robbing the elderly, and unfortunately we all know that happens all to often, too.

    1. Isn’t it romantic…

I’m sure it wasn’t kids. Someone has some beautiful roses and an inexpensive vase sitting in her house right now. Did she steal them herself, or did some suitor bring them to her? Roses from a dead soldier’s grave–who doesn’t want that?

    1. It’s really creepy to wonder who the hell goes to that area of the post. There is NOTHING there but the cemetery, and no through ways to anything else. It’s no longer an Army post, though the National Guard and the Reserves are quartered there now. The National Guard is pretty close by, but this is off the main roads–and I can’t let myself believe that anyone serving her or his country would steal flowers off a veteran’s grave.

  5. It just takes one lone sicko. Most normal people would never do such a thing. Tricky thing is, “normal” isn’t always apparent on the surface and neither is sicko.

  6. There are times when I wish my mom had a headstone, so I could leave flowers. I think this cured me. It would be pretty damn hard for someone to steal the trees around the lake on Mt. Hood where her ashes are scattered.

  7. I know at the Veteran’s Cemetary where my dad is they will remove any flowers, vases, gifts, whatever that are not in those metal attach-to-a-base-on-the-ground vases.
But other than that, yeah, dear gods, how heartless.
I feel sorry for that gal- just imagine the suitor coming in, “Honey, I saw these and thought of you”.
