visions

Trying to illustrate how I see things right now. One of the most frustrating parts is that no glasses I have will correct most of this. The glasses I use for my screens, whether computer or phone, can’t correct the shadows and some blind spots, but can at least give me a little clearer focus. But for both eyes to see so differently, and to see fog through one eye, is why things are frustrating and headache-inducing now.

The left photo shows what the camera sees. The right photo shows vision in my left eye, even wearing glasses. In fact, it often seems better if I DON’T wear glasses, especially in outdoor light. The colors are mostly the same, but the focus is dulled. For this eye, I just need a different prescription.

The left photo shows what the camera sees. The right photo shows vision in my right eye, with or without glasses. Color is drained because everything is foggy. For this eye, I need surgery.

Add confusing light and shadow shifts due to movement around me or my own motion, and blurred peripheral perception… You may understand why I spend significant amounts of time staying still with my eyes closed. I’m grateful there’s surgery that can help and I’m scheduled for it.

    1. You mentioned that recently, and I had no idea until then. I got it in January 2022 because it went well with those paintings I was doing at the time (as shown here over the windows), and I wanted something to brighten the room in general. I think I ordered it through Bed, Bath, and Beyond (and I was looking for something that would remind me of a character’s bohemian fashion tendencies).

The quilt my mother did that’s hanging on the wall is currently being deconstructed and reconstructed by Lynne to remove two of the white panels that were signed by two toxic people from my family’s past. Those two panels are being replaced by ones signed by Tom and Tim, because they were both so good to and helpful with Mother during her last years.

And yes, everyone who’s had surgery tells me it will make a huge difference. That’s why I’m so grateful that I can do it.

  1. Yikes!

A couple of weeks ago, I was finding my left eye wasn’t staying in focus with my right eye. It wasn’t as bad as yours; it was just a bit blurry. It was so nauseating! I could do some long winks and suddenly both eyes were in focus, and a few moments later the left eye was out of focus a bit again. I thought I had hair or guck in my eye, but that wasn’t it. I haven’t had the problem again so far, but I have been wanting an eye doctor appointment. Cataracts are common from those insanely high magnetic fields ye olde tymme CRT monitors of yesteryear. The old lab ones were infamous for burning my eyes in college, but some of those were refurbished and definitely were mechanically out of focus, because I could still see the individual pixels! These days it’s all about the iStrain devices. So, I hope the surgery goes well!

    1. Thank you! Yes, cataracts can certainly play havoc with how you see/don’t see the world. I hope your situation either resolves or you, too, can get some help.

        1. I’m so glad! Some of your symptoms sounded like it could have been migraine-related, but I am NO doctor! I feel for anyone who has headaches and/or vision problems of any kind.
