Button Sunday

Today, March 6, is Namesake Day. Do any of your names come from someone else? I don’t think I was named for anyone. My parents aren’t alive to ask, but I’m pretty sure they’d have told me. Both my siblings were named for someone.

My middle name has been used for one of my sister’s daughter’s middle name and one of her granddaughter’s middle name, but I think they spelled the granddaughter’s name differently from mine.

  1. I am and I’m not. When my mom was boarding the jet plane to America She saw a magazine and the cover girl was Marika Kulius … I am named after the last thing she saw when leaving her country. I kinda love that

  2. No, neither my brother nor I were named for anyone. My parents purposefully chose names that cannot be abbreviated, since both of theirs’ were. People just lengthen mine instead!

    1. There’s a story someone tells in one of my novels in progress about people making “nicknames” of other people’s names. I knew someone in my young years who did that to the point of ridiculousness. That person wouldn’t have lengthened your name but called you “Mar,” like that’s any easier to say than “Mark.” Silly, but plenty of people also find it annoying to be “renamed,” and I don’t blame them a bit. Our names are part of our identity, and hearing them used with respect is affirming.

      1. A lot of people call me Marcus or Marky – even straight guys. I guess it is their equivalent of abbreviating it? I don’t mind, though.

        1. There’s a meme going around on social media that people use a lot for their dogs (because most people have many pet names for their dogs). It always cracks me up when I see one. Our Eva Ruby, for example, has so many nicknames we don’t remember them all. I let people be my guide with nicknames, as I have friends who HATE them. It’s good they don’t bother you, especially when meant in affection. I have a nickname only my family calls (or called) me, so I’m very particular who else uses it.

Not sure if this will work for you, but it’s a stream of the dog (and cat!) name meme.

  3. named after 3 aunts… but called by a name that is a shortened version of a mispronunciation by my niece 0f my name …
