  1. Easiest Snoopy Saturday Ever:
Religious: “In The Bleak Midwinter” – speaks to my life of failure, yet with rays of hope.
Secular: “The Christmas Song” – the Nat King Cole rendition; any others are wannabes.

    1. Can you believe I never heard “In the Bleak Midwinter,” that I know of? It’s profoundly beautiful, and you gave me info about Christina Rossetti I didn’t know.

I was familiar with the phrase because it’s the title of one of the books in a mystery series I read (I think I mentioned to you before, maybe, by Julia Spencer-Fleming about an Army pilot who’s become an Episcopal priest and her relationship with the town’s chief of police).

And of course you can’t go wrong with Nat King Cole and “The Christmas Song.” Classic.

      1. Speaking of Nat…would you please change Nate to Nat for me? I’ve been embarrassed for days that I stuck that “e” on there. Merry Christmas!

      1. In a desperate attempt to save my sanity in any retail store here (they are ALL playing the same music from the *same* radio station which has been playing the same music repeatedly, and they just went into marathons of the same song, sung by different artists),

I had been marching through the stores, whistling to Darth Vader’s Imperial March as loud as I can, because I forgot my headphones. I have not had the chance to see Star Wars 7 –yet!

I am serious, by the way. This holiday desperately needs new and unique music!

        1. I agree. I would love it more contemporary artists did something new with Christmas music and created some classics for generations to come.

And frankly, I believe the Imperial March is one of the most awesome pieces of music ever.

  2. Silent Night .. first, GERMAN … second, I’ve been to Oberndorf in Austria … and it is possibly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been ,,, and I can understand being there, on a winter night, and being inspired by anything, and honestly not to get all corney but being nestled in the beauty of the Austrian Alps, it’s pretty easy to believe in something beyond yourself.

Snoopy/Red Baron Christmas… Love Snoopy, combined with my Germaness … also good message !

  3. Best religious hymn would be “OH, HOLY NIGHT”. I was a boy soprano in the grade school choir and for several years I sang at midnight mass dressed in a red cassock and starched white surplus singing it. And it has some real high notes when you get to …
Fall on your knees O hear the angels voices.
O night divine O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine.
I still sing along with Josh Grobin’s recording of it on Christmas Eve. (If Renee lets me.)
And Marika because the church was founded by my German Ancestors we also sang Stille Nacht! Heil’ge Nacht!

Secular would have to be “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” because growing up in the 40’s all seven of my uncles were in Europe, Africa and the South Pacific.

    1. I think “Oh Holy Night” will always be my favorite. Wasn’t it you who first introduced me to Chloe Agnew–or maybe just the song “Going Home” that she sang (and which we played at my mother’s memorial service–I will always thank you for that).

But if you haven’t heard it, you might like her version of “Oh Holy Night” with Celtic Woman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ-8jYpa1-o

    1. Also my favorite religious song. And I swear I never saw “Frosty the Snowman” until I was grown (though of course I’d heard the song). Almost all my favorite Christmas songs are the religious ones. Though you may remember I have a fondness for the Eagles’ “Please Come Home for Christmas.” =)

A lot of the popular secular songs make me sad. I have a weird relationship with Christmas, as you know.

  4. Hark the Herald Angels Sing is so uplifting. I do love In the Bleak Midwinter, though.

Winter Wonderland. Deffo. Such a good singalong song.
