On the most recent episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway All Stars, the last four designers were asked to create a look for Michelle Smith’s New York-based fashion label Milly. The looks were to use Michelle’s custom fabrics and retail for $400.
I’m sure it’s no surprise that no one sent me any Milly fabrics to create my look. However, there’s a fabric I’ve had my eye on for a while, a playful print in keeping with some of the brightly colored dresses I’ve seen in other Milly collections. I chose Skelita Calaveras to walk the runway in my look; if anyone can understand the pressure for a model to stay thin, it’s Skelita. I’ll let the design speak for itself.
Hope you’ve enjoyed the look. Skelita is going to eat a sandwich. See the rest of you next time on the runway!

Heavens to Betsy! She’s skinny! I like the pattern – and the design. Reminiscent of the 60s, perhaps?
Thanks. I love creating anything 60s retro. If you check out my response to Lynn’s comment below, I included a photo of the 1960s Mondrian dresses that I love. My sister had one.
Shouldn’t that be Heavens to Milly? 🙂
🙂
Reminds me of a Piet Mondrian print. I do like the look.
Thanks! It was that Mondrian effect of the fabric that hooked me. When she was a teen, my sister had one of those dresses.
I wish I had a matching shirt and shorts in that print. I’d even wear it in the ho-hum collared-with-tie environment. This city needs colorful , inspiring clothes for men, regardless of orientations. I noticed, during the holiday shopping, there was a very sharp blue-is-for-boys-pink-is-for-girls-But, I’m a Cheerleader attitude towards gifts, in a town that celebrates the end of family gatherings with gun shows.
An entire outfit in real-person size would certainly be noticed!
I am SO GUILTY of the pink/blue thing for kids. I’m trying to eradicate it.
She’s all skin and BONES — har har har har … I really like the 60’s feel of it all … very cute. Great choice in fabrics and I love the bold colors.
Thanks very much, Marika. You know I love my Sixties. The decade, I mean–I’m still…let’s see, subtract this from that, and carry the…um…math is hard. But I am not in my sixties yet, that’s for sure.
I guess this is carrying skin and bone models to the extreme? I wanted to enjoy design, but dem bones, dem bones, dem bleached bonees kept getting in the way.
Skelita has a bone to pick with you for your skeleton-shaming!
Yes, someone DEFINITELY needs a sandwich or five! Nice design.
She needs to drink some Wesson oil, too!
Thanks. =)
I love the fabric, the cut, everything!! This is one of my all-time favorites.
Thanks, Gary. True confession: I created my pattern by looking at the original Mattel dress Skelita was wearing. I made adjustments, but I liked the silhouette on her bony (heh) frame.
If only some of the designers on the show were as conscious of their models frames, we might not see such hideous creations at times.
