Magnetic Poetry 365:270

The old Juicy Fruit wasn’t yellow.

Did anyone else make chains with chewing gum wrappers? When you stretched the chain to its full length, it was supposed to be as tall as the man you’d marry.

Or if you could separate the white backing from the gum’s inner foil wrapping without tearing the foil, it was good luck.

Modern gum packaging makes these things archaic. LIKE ME.

This poem is for Debby, Jackie, and Jackie’s younger sister Sherry. I loved those mornings in that cold car feeling like one of the “big girls.”

  1. I guess I was supposed to marry a giant. My chain went on and on and on. Your poem started me thinking of gum in general and the times of my life associated with different kinds. Juicy Fruit? Teaberry? Clove? Fruit Stripe? All stories in their own right. Thanks for the memory journey.

  2. OK, totally random and off topic…but for the last 3 months, I’ve been seeing Wrigley’s wrappers all OVER the place, including the floor of Macy’s Ladies Shoe Dept. It’s weird.

    1. Giggling, because when I first responded to your comment, I wasn’t logged in and the default is for Jim, because he’s the last person who commented from this computer via Google Chrome–in July! I had to delete “his” comment and do it again as me.

I wonder if I were on Firefox, which is the browser Tom uses, if I’d be commenting as him.

  3. That’s Juicy Fruit?!? sigh
We never made chains, but we went through a LOT of Juicy Fruit & I remember I had a thing for grape Hubba Bubba. In fact, I remember spending a week at my grandmother’s & going to this toy store- there was this awesome toy store right on the bus route- and I added grape Hubba Bubba when I picked out my Kissing Barbie ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I love hearing memories like that. This one, in the box, went for &175 on Amazon. You got a better deal–AND grape Hubba Bubba!

  4. We used to make chains out of gum wrappers on the long drives to visit family. We made chains of soda pop pull tabs (now I’m really showing my age!) at home.

    1. You want old… I used to use those pull tabs to scrape the purple ink off ditto sheets to make corrections before printing stuff. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about?
