What day is it?

I’ll be confused about what day it is all week, not only because I was out of town for several days, but because of the Labor Day holiday. I trust you all had a good one–if you weren’t fighting floods and fires. No one can say August swept into September without drama.

I have a squash casserole bubbling in the oven. Tim won’t touch it, so I’m steaming asparagus for him. And there’s CORNBREAD, no sugar. Also part of my meal of pork chops will be this wonderful Lebanese salad I learned to make in the Mesozoic age from my college roommates. We call it sof-sof, but you may have seen it as tabbouleh. I don’t know why I don’t make it more often; it’s refreshing. I guess I prefer to keep it as a treat.

Today brought an exciting mail call! Not only does Rolling Stone have my Fab Four fave George Harrison on the cover, but Steve B sent a surprise all the way from the Sunshine State. Thanks, Steve! Haven’t seen any of these for a while.

In the background of the photo, you can see a set of magnetic words laid out on a baking sheet. As you know, I draw words randomly for the daily poems, but this is a very special set sent by Marika, even somewhat personalized for me, so I wanted to see all the words. You’ll probably start seeing poems made from them along about November, which is the month something sparkly our way comes.

In the last week: lots of good family, good friends, good food, good life. Thanks to all of you who make it that way.

  1. It was my pleasure. I was surprised to find them.

As to George, I saw a trailer for a documentary about him coming from Martin Scorsese. George was always my favorite, especially the Concert For Bangladesh.

    1. I was surprised to get them! Thank you again.

I know, I know! I posted a link to that trailer a couple of weeks ago–I almost leaped out of my skin with happiness when I saw it. I hadn’t known a documentary was in the works. Exciting! George was my favorite, too. It made a nice balance between me and my friend Riley, who was a passionate John Lennon-ist.

  2. whatever is in that bowl, I want to put my face in it, and only stop munching when the cornbread is done. Good mail day! I love the poetry .. .and I cant wait to see the pictures you come up with

  3. Ah! A double hit from you to me today:
My first taste of tabbouleh was when I went to Lebanon and Israel right after the first gulf war. I had it as a side dish to my very first lamb shawarma (the thought of which makes my mouth water even now). Had it again in Instanbul off a street food cart near the Blue Mosque.

And, I’m currently trying to pick my way through Harrison’s “Norwegian Wood” on my new Martin. Real musicians make their stuff sound and seem so easy to play.

Sounds as if you had a great Labor Day. Alabama Rolled, Auburn nearly lost (damn!) We kept both our granddaughters this weekend while their geeky mom and dad went to Atlanta for something called “Dragoncon.” Glad everyone is back in their appropriate homes tonight.

    1. I love it when I hear from you. Can’t believe you never had sof-sof at the house on Twelfth Avenue with us. I have a photo of you there I keep meaning to send–it shows why I don’t have MORE photos of you–you are avoiding the camera like it’s an M16 I’m shooting.

Dragoncon sounds fun; keeping granddaughters sounds even more fun. One day I’m gonna get to hear you play that guitar in person. =)

  4. Cornbread w/no sugar is just not right …. just sayin’ …. and the sof-sof looks yummy …. did I tell you I work for food ???? Hint Hint 😉

    1. No! Can you believe it? We did, then they vanished. Sometimes they make a brief reappearance, but not often. We do have those nasty honey-flavored-twisty ones.
