Heidi: On the most recent episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway, the designers were asked to create an American sportswear look inspired by Jackie Kennedy.
Barbie: The show’s designers seemed to be very confused by what those directions meant, so I knew I had to pick the right model to keep Becks on track. Someone with a bit of a Jackie look, but current.
Summer: Fortunately, Mattel always comes through, this time with Barbie Basics 1.5, Model No. 13.
Heidi: She’s lucky thirteen!
Barbie: Also known as Morgan.
Heidi: Speaking of lucky, this bubbly dress makes me feel like I’m at the Mermaid Lounge in Vegas.
Barbie: I feel like I’m in a bubblegum dress!
Summer: I feel pretty.
Heidi: Does Becks make Morgan feel pretty? Let’s check it out.
Midway into their design challenge, the contestants were asked to also create an outerwear look.
Becks chose a satin-finished waterproof fabric to make a jacket.
The marabou feathers provide a fun frame for Morgan’s beautiful face.
Just a couple of snaps and the coat is easily removed.
Morgan wears a cotton top with a subtle print, three-quarter-length sleeves, and a rolled collar.
Her hip-hugging, cranberry satin pants are accented with a wide leather belt, also designed by Becks.
Morgan says she loves the entire look and definitely sees it as Jackie-inspired.
See you next time on the runway.
Heidi, Barbie, and Summer’s dresses were sewn by Becks.

They DID have a lot of problems with the challenge didn’t they? I knew that Mondo had it in the bag the minute I saw the fabric that he show. And weren’t the judges over the top this week? And seriously, how did andy not go home, because as mean as it was, they were right.. Jackie O in those pants, really? Of course, the whole episode was worth it to hear Tim Gunn say “camel toe.”
Now, on to your design, I love the jacket – the “faux fur” is fab, and the jacket in silver goes well with the outfit that she is wearing. She looks great with the hood pulled up. I also thought the rolled collar on the top was especially nice! You did a really great job!
Thanks! It was such a weird challenge that I knew I wasn’t going to do anything innovative. Once I watched Tim Gunn’s video on FB, I understood why it was so confusing. It went through several versions before they settled on one, and the judges and designers had different ideas about the challenge guidelines.
I love the color you chose!! The top is especially nice.
Thank you.
That jacket… holy smokes. That is perfection. This ensemble’s colors are devastating. They photograph beautifully. I even love the backdrop. There must be something in my coffee making me so color-appreciative. : )
I like the sound of this challenge! Reading Jaqueline Kennedy: The White House Years changed my life.
Originally, the challenge winner’s design was to be used in the biopic about JK that will star Katie Holmes. But that changed somewhere along the way and things got muddled, and no one really knew what they were supposed to be doing–or when they did get it straightened out, the judges had a different understanding. So I just tried to create something that would look current but still have a Jackie vibe–and that if Jackie were a young woman alive today she wouldn’t be ashamed to wear.
I hope.
Another winner, Becky! Who wouldn’t love to wear that outfit?
Thanks! I’d wear it! If I had that figure. =)
OH. MY. GAWD.
That jacket. I wouldn’t know where to begin making a jacket, let alone a hooded jacket.
Fantastic, Becky.
Thank you! Do you want to borrow this outfit and go as Morgan for Halloween? =) Than again–have you thought of going as Edith Head?
