For Greg

A little Project Runway chat. I like this season and think it includes more experienced designers than any of the other seasons. Though there are a few quirky people, right now, there are no standout talents to me. I know that will change.

I was talking to Tom after last night’s episode about something that surprised me and why I think all the designers were so freaked out. Not one of the designers–at least after the “you’re in” group was moved off the runway–had applied his or her individual vision to the challenge. They were all freaked about doing menswear and freaked about Tiki Barber instead of figuring out how to put their particular spin on it. As my example, I talked about what Uli would have done last season. She’d have played to her strength and done a design she might have described as:

I pictured Tiki doing a pre-season interview on location with several Miami Dolphins players. Because he’s out of the studio and in south Florida, I wanted to put him in softer colors but with classic cuts that (blah blah blah), and I made this tie to add a little tropical element (blah blah blah).

None of last night’s designers really combined their strengths with Tiki’s profession and barely even took into account the things HE told them about what he liked or how he liked to conceal his flaws. While they were working, they barely mentioned Tiki at all.

They did, however, like those male models. So did I!

  1. I think the problematic aspect of last night’s challenge was both money and time. First, mens wear is often much more formal, more layered and in a way more fitted and second, the fabrics used in formal wear are often more expensive.

I really would have preferred for the contestants to have an extra day on this one – there was simply too much crap and unfinished crap on the runway (about 1/2) and those who did finish opted for incomplete outfits.

SweetPea’s shirt was just crap on a stick – the girl who lost never got to her shirt, two others held stuff together with safety pins… ukkk

I rather think the chubby guy and Victoria may both be dark horses and the drape guy probably has the chops as well – I think all of them are holding back or trying to pass to bigger challenges.

Did you SEE that horror wrap knitted THING created last week – OMG I would have looked like a goodwill blanket left out to rot in that.

Are you talking about this? If so, the way it kept stretching and stretching, if you HAD been left out to rot, every homeless person in a ten mile radius could have gotten under it with you and stayed warm.

      1. To clarify I should state I have an actual tv … in fact I have two there is a huge one in the closet that the last tennant left. Mine is actually very small and has a built in DVD player … so I can watch DVD’s … but to get actual tv reception I would have to have cable … and it’s just something that I have learned to live without.

          1. I just can’t stomach the thought of a cable bill anymore. Kindly Landlord has phone, internet and basic cable — and it costs him almost $200 a month and thats with it being all together so he saves money. ABC puts all it’s shows online now … and AOL has a bunch of free shows, and then there are other sites as well. I kinda feel bad — like I’m stealing Dexter … but not bad enough to stop!

    1. According to Tiki he does. If I recall correctly, he said he has a large neck and a large butt. I don’t remember what else he said.

      He’s a very handsome man.
