The Compound goes green

Not in that St. Patrick’s Day kind of way. Though The Compound grounds are vast, we have opted to stop using a gas-powered mower for the sake of our planet.

Tom with the new push mower.

Unfortunately, I have found that this is so easy that even I can do it.

  1. why have i not thought of this?! i’ve been debating whether or not to get a mower so i don’t have to pay to get the yard mowed, why did this never enter my mind?!

where did you get this mower?

    1. Tom got it today at Lowe’s and it cost around a hundred dollars (including tax). It’s REALLY easy to push. He’ll still have to use the edger for tight spaces, but overall, this is going to work well for us.

      1. you’ll have to let me know how it continues to work. and what brand is this you have – the only one lowes had?

i’ve done some reading on different types on amazon and they keep saying the grass can’t be too tall or it won’t work. my grass is something called winter grass and it grows FAST (we’ve learned over the past two weeks since it was mowed) and i’m pretty sure i’m not going to want to mow every weekend. every other is more likely.

      2. Ya know…there are push edgers. I know this, because one of my college landlords had us use one. Long stick with a giant spur on the end. It wasn’t too dreadful. Then again, I was 21.

        1. I’ve used those in the dim past. Works for the edge on the sidewalk, but not next to fences, etc. And I’m not getting on my knees with a scissors for that job.

  2. Wow! Everything old is new again, huh? The last time I saw one of those was when I was a little kid. I think it might have been my grandpa’s. I didn’t realize new ones were still being made!

  3. We live in a trailer park with a tiny yard, and my wife complains about ours all the time. Then again, our grass is weird. It may be crab grass, but we call it green stuff. We tried to kill it off and grow REAL grass, but we just end up with dead spots. Real grass can’t grow in our clay yard. I’m glad yours works better. Melissa finally gave up and used our electric trimmer for the whole yard instead. :-/

    1. We don’t have much yard or much grass–mostly lots of clover and weeds right now. I think I know the grass you’re talking about and can believe it would be difficult.
