FINALLY, less than a week away…

The lawyers have the signed non-disclosure agreements. The chauffeur is prepared to pick them up at the airport and blindfold them before driving them here. The photo rules (no visible address, no readable dogs’ tags, and no unphotoshopped Becky) have been negotiated and agreed to.

The Compounders will put forth a burst of effort to unpack the rest of the boxes and hang the art on the walls. And when all of that is done, mid-week next week, we will celebrate the arrival of these two clowns. Oh, David, don’t be afraid. I don’t mean clowns LITERALLY. Just two people who need to be rescued from gray skies and snow-covered landscapes, and who’ll be rescuing me from a hard start to a new year.

Can’t wait!!

And beauty at my fingertips…

Friendship is one of the most tangible things in a world
which offers fewer and fewer supports.

Kenneth Branagh

I found that quote while reading Finding Water: The Art of Perseverance by Julia Cameron. Many years ago, upon the recommendation of James, I used her book The Artist’s Way as a means for focusing and disciplining my creative urges. On my sidebar to the right, you can see evidence of where that effort led.

I’d forgotten the help The Artist’s Way and its exercises provided until I recently plucked The Art of Perseverance from a group of books that monkjoel so graciously provided. Because of many circumstances, it’s been so hard to write (and finish–which I haven’t yet) A COVENTRY WEDDING, but Julia Cameron is helping.

Also helping are so many other gestures of friendship from my friends who read here (books! calls! e-mails! other goodies!), and from Tom and Tim, without whom I’d be a complete wreck right now, from my wonderful sister and brother, and of course, from my incredible friends in Houston.

Like today, when The Brides made me laugh with the card that accompanied these gorgeous flowers they sent to The Compounders. Thank you, Rhonda and Lindsey. They are stunning.

And something that can cheer us all up…

Have I mentioned lately how much I love this man?

Before Christmas, Tom and I decided that a great gift for Tim would be a case of Moxie. I called the Catawissa Bottling Company in Pennsylvania to place an order. The woman who talked to me was SO FREAKING NICE. I also ordered a T-shirt for him. When I told her that Tim was from Maine, she suggested a different T-shirt, not shown on the web site, that she was sure would be more to his Maine taste.

Why? Because of this.

She even called me a week or so after delivery to make sure we got the Moxie okay. Very cool. =)

I know…

…that I’m really reaching for something to be cheerful about, but these photos are for you, Rhonda. I figured after the whining I did to you last weekend, you’d be glad to know that I have… BOOKCASES!

They are unfinished oak, but I was in no mood to wait for them to be stained. I’m now down to about fifteen boxes from fifty-plus. The Compound will be more serene soon.

Rest in peace, Heath Ledger.

Hump Day Happy

I’m sorry that I’m such a dull LJer lately. It will get better, I promise. Meanwhile, I figured why not add a new feature to Photo Friday and Button Sunday. I’ve decided to call it Hump Day Happy in honor of Wednesday, and you get to play along. Here’s how.

Years ago, when I was an assistant manager at a bookstore, I picked up this little item:

I recently rediscovered it when shifting books around. It’s 612 pages long, and every page has a list of 15-30 items to be happy about. If you want something to be happy about, in my comments, give me a page number between 1 and 612, and an item number between 1 and 30. I’ll locate that particular “thing” to be happy about and tell you. It may be silly. It may be something you’ve never thought of. It may give you an idea for a story or a post or a blog entry. Or it may just make you giddy with happiness on a Wednesday. If not–what the hell is wrong with you, do you just LOVE MISERY?

Comment if you please.
