Midweek

Nothing clever to say, no anecdotes, no reminiscences. Very little writing done, but I tried. Replaced a couple of small broken kitchen appliances. Was VERY happy our frozen hot water line thawed with no damages that Tom can find. The cold has abated somewhat.

Dogs just wanna get warm.

Or watch TV with Tom.

Happy birthday to somebody I still like to think about and remember. Something you once said to me is engraved on my heart in a way that will always delight me. Also, you had a nickname for me, and I may let one of my characters use it for another character.

Happy Caturday!

I don’t have cats, but in solidarity with those who do, I thought I’d dedicate part of today’s post to cats. Mainly because Debby gave me this cool Haunted Cat Tarot deck for Christmas. Any particular card you’d like to see?

When I took her to an appointment earlier in the week, I took this coloring book with me.

I’d already torn a page out of it at some point, and I decided to color that one. But I wasn’t sure how to color it, so I looked up various wild cats and found this one to inspire me.

Here’s how it turned out.

What I do have is dogs. The other day, after a frantic round of digging, which she isn’t supposed to do, Delta apparently found somebody’s last marble.

It’s all cleaned up and put with the other marbles now.

Meanwhile, Anime had dental surgery yesterday morning, and she’s had a miserable two days. She started drinking water again sometime around noon today, and this evening, she took some meatballs (canned dog food rolled around her regular meds and her pain med). She’s finally stopped dripping blood from her mouth and is overall a lot more comfortable tonight. Through it all, she’s been very sweet and stoic, so clearly it wasn’t her last marble Delta found.

The tree has been stripped and all the ornaments and decorations have been put away.

Except we have to find the bin that has the box that my vintage Holt Howard angel goes in. Meanwhile, I posed her with an appropriate old Southern novel that I haven’t read in decades and probably should read again.

Sometimes when I get really busy, I forget to eat. When tonight’s light meal of a BLT, half an apple, and some potato chips seemed ridiculously good, it occurred to me that I’d only eaten yogurt with the water and coffee I drank today. It was a good sandwich, though.

A chilled out hump day

Had another bout of insomnia last night but still woke up early. I took a nap later, and this always interferes with any plans I might have made for the day that require focus. Did a little more toward Christmas un-decorating, spent time outside with the dogs and cleaning their “gifts” out of the backyard (tomorrow being trash day), and then I decided to try to identify the other three new-to-me dolls that came via Lynne.

Don’t know if it’s my tired brain, but I can’t say I’m confident about who the dolls are. I have some queries out to other doll collectors on Flickr, but in the meantime, here’s a fun photo I shot of them.

Ken has what’s often called the “Alan face mold,” it having been used first for friend doll Alan, maybe in 1990, and later used for around twenty-six Ken dolls (several of which I own). Then a modified version was used for another nineteen dolls (and yep, I own some of them, too).

The doll’s head doesn’t fit comfortably on the articulated body, and if this hadn’t come from a child’s collection, I’d think it was a collector-modified doll. However, there was in fact a doll that both had this head mold and posable arms and legs, and that’s the 1994 Hot Skatin’ Ken. The year fits, so I’ll accept Hot Skatin’ Ken for him. I kind of wish I had his original outfit. I’ve dressed him in some nice jeans, a pair of white sneakers, and a shirt I made. Looks like he and his friends are going to a block party where he’ll be forced to play guitar. I wonder if he plays as well as he skates.

Right now, my best guesses on these two are (white earrings) 1996 Valentine Fun Barbie or 1997 Shopping Time Walmart Special Barbie, and (red earrings) 1996 Valentine Romance Barbie. I cleaned up their hair disasters with a shampoo and conditioner, took the hair shears to some of the frizz and messy ends, and, as shown in the top photo, found clothes for them from the Doll Closet. Those are Mattel 1962 Fashion Pak gathered skirts. I guess the Barbies wanted to go a little retro. Then they sassed up their looks with a couple of midriff-baring tops and cute heels. They’re taking little dog Chicago with them so he can sing along with Skatin’ Ken.

What a party!

Workin’ Out

From the four new-to-me dolls from Margret, via Lynne, I knew the Teresa doll (left) would be the easiest for me to identify if the earrings were original to her and especially because her body type is articulated, usually only done for a limited number of dolls. I was right; I found her immediately, Mattel’s 1996 Workin’ Out Teresa doll.

Here’s her description: Teresa has a pair of orange button earrings, an orange work-out outfit, a pair of white leg warmers, a pair of orange shoes with suction cups, and included are a standard-size music cassette, a doll-sized cassette player with headphones, barbells, and a bottle of water.

What I really hoped was that the similar pink earrings on the articulated Barbie next to her in the photo meant she was also a Workin’ Out doll, and again, the answer is yes. One was made in Malaysia and one in China, both with 1993 articulated body types, and Barbie’s description matches Teresa’s, except she’s in pink.

Their hair was a hot mess. I didn’t get a photo of Teresa’s before I brushed out the tangles, cleaned it, added a bit of Volks Water Wax, and banded it, but here’s how Barbie’s hair looked before. These are dolls that were played with, the very best kind for doll rescuers like me. Perfect dolls come new in the box, and they’re great (you know I love them because I have SO MANY), but there’s something heartwarming about getting dolls that were an important part of someone’s childhood. There’s a reason people cry at the Toy Story movies. Whether or not we held on to the toys we cherished, they remain special in our memories, and I treat other people’s dolls with an awareness of that.

Along with the hair wax, I broke out the other doll haircare stuff (Barbie’s split ends needed a tiny bit of trimming).

Here’s how their hair looks now. Shiny!

Since they’re sporty girls, I dressed them appropriately from the Barbie wardrobe room (i.e., the closet in the guest room, aka Lynne’s Room).

I have no shoes that will go on these dolls’ flat feet. I found their original suction-cup shoes online and they’ll be here next week, and also a couple of pairs of sandals they can probably wear. If not, the sandals will fit the doll who is now shoeless thanks to Jack.

I am a big fan of the Grady Goat Foundation and all the work they do. I’ll probably share this photo on my Instagram account so I can tag them, because clearly these new dolls are ready for GOAT YOGA!

Tiny Tuesday!

Mark, if you come by here, happiest of birthdays to you today. 🎂

Today’s a good day in our family memories.

Our nephew Aaron was born on this date in 1993. It seems impossible he’s been gone eleven years. We can never have enough time with people we love, especially as deeply as he’s loved. I hope everyone who knew him has a wealth of good, funny, happy, sweet, powerful memories to celebrate his time here with us. I think of his parents, brother, sister, and all the aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who miss him. Today, may they remember the connections to him that bring joy.

Aaron, Penny, Pixie, and Timothy on March 12, 2012.

Since it’s Tiny Tuesday, here’s a photo from last year, though the snowman Aaron and Alex gave me one Christmas is displayed this year, too.

I’ve said it on here before: Aunt Becky is the best job title I ever had.

King of the Acorns

We’ve had an abundance of acorns this autumn, and no matter how many times we’ve swept or raked them and disposed of them, they’ve been replenished. Folklore has it that excessive acorns mean a hard winter* (an indicator that animals will be well fed during unusually long or intense cold seasons). Folklore is rarely dependable in today’s climate studies.

Still, I dubbed Rocky “King of the Acorns” today at his annual wreathing.

*I used this factoid in one of the novels in the Neverending Saga after a conversation with Lynne.

ETA: Later, after Tom and Debby returned from running errands, Tom took me outside to see what Timothy had done earlier in the day. He’s been working on cleaning and pruning the front yard, and he wanted to try some plants/herbs in Rocky’s flower bed, where they can get more light. Thanks, Tim!

And Tom has put the Christmas wreaths in the windows, including two in the windows of Lynne’s room.

And four in the living room windows. They now have little plaid reindeer on them.

somewhere you’ll feel free

Such terrible news to get today, and I was fortunate to hear it from friends who knew you as I did, having also experienced your humor, your heart, your generosity. The last year and a half, including your eleven months under medical care, were brutal on you. Still, you looked forward to a better life in the aptly named “Fairhope” with the old friend who invited you to move there. You told me your mother said she might move there, too, then you wanted to travel to England and Germany with her and maybe take a Rhine River cruise together. To know that your mother died nine days before you makes me imagine just the two of you again, as it was for much of your life, facing a future together against all odds. I hope you’re both at peace.

I regret that I’ll never get to read that novel you’ve been writing. You had such a gift of voice, pacing, and making everything turn out okay for the women you wrote. You’d have given Summer a happy conclusion, just as you once did for Emily–and you hoped to write a second Emily book one day, too.

I will imagine a happier-forever-after for you, where you save a place on that boat on the Rhine for your forever dog Dash to sit between you and your mother, with Kissing Michael on your other side. You belong with your love on your arm.

Bon voyage, Marika.

Scenes from our Friday celebrations

Here are a few photos from Friday, when we celebrated Thanksgiving late and Lynne’s birthday early.

Tim, Debby, and Lynne

Dessert table with some of Lynne’s gifts, plus at one point or another, homemade chocolate chip cookies, brownies, birthday cake, rum balls, bourbon balls, KahlĂșa balls, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, cheese straws, sausage and cheese balls, and the cream cheese crack dip.

Tim, Debby, Tom, and Lynne

Closer look at Lynne’s birthday cake with unicorns and rainbow candles.

Don’t know if I got a photo with all the food on the feast table. Here I see: dressing, fried okra, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, broccoli, and turkey breast.

And from this angle: squash casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, a basket of rolls, and field peas with snaps.

Tim, Debby, Lynne, and me

After dinner, gift opening and birthday song singing and cake eating for Lynne (her birthday is this coming Monday)!

Because of some of the foods we cook, dishes we use, and conversations we share, there are a lot of memories on this, my favorite of holidays. Last year all of our Christmas decorations were up by Thanksgiving. This year, Tom and I will probably be handling that next weekend.

We do have one Christmas tradition already in process. Lynne took about fifty photos from which I chose the family Christmas photo. The gratifying thing is that only a few days ago when I was talking to another friend on her birthday, she said she was looking forward to the Christmas card/letter/photo I’ll send in December. I always hope people like hearing from us. I love getting cards, letters, and photos from our friends and family. As soon as the photo’s printed, I’ll tackle the Christmas and holiday cards to send out.

Today (Saturday), Tom and Lynne watched the Alabama-Auburn football game (while I only watched the score in the writing sanctuary). Tom’s and my alma mater, Alabama, won the game. It never matters what both teams’ records look like going into the game, ANYTHING can happen in the fierce Iron Bowl rivalry. Of course I always want Alabama to win, but we have so many people in both our families who went to Auburn or are big Auburn fans, that however it turns out, I’m happy for the ones who get to celebrate.

Also, there were lots and lots of conversations during the days Lynne was here about the Neverending Saga. I have officially begun the seventh novel (while Lynne reread the sixth). Soon, I’ll probably be back to posting playlists of what I listen to while I write. I found something online I meant to save so I could share it when I talked on here about the series, but I can’t find it now.

The dogs were a lively, cute, exasperating, always lurking for a handout or something tasty to drop to the floor, and very welcome part of the weekend. I thought I shot a photo of Minute sleeping on the hearth in front of the fire, but apparently I didn’t. Tom got this shot of Delta and Jack sharing Eva’s favorite dog bed.

I caught Anime and Delta on the run outside.

Pollock very much enjoyed having Tim with him at Thanksgiving.

A very fluffy Stewie, having just been brushed by Debby.

Eva being held by Tom next to the food table–after the food has been cleared, alas.

Caught in the act!

Anime, caught in the act!

Of stopping to smell the roses.

My laptop is at Apple getting some battery care. So I’m using my old HP laptop. It’s a challenge to go back to Windows from Mac (Macs were actually part of my “origin story”; I used one of those little ones even before the first PCs I ever used).

Like this.

From Mac to HP: different command keys, different screen, different keyboard and mouse (I never use my touch pads no matter what make of laptop I use; I plug in a full size keyboard and a real mouse–except on the Mac, they’re wireless). See Becky relearn!
