All I ever wanted was to know that you were dreaming

I have a passion for home, but I long ago accepted that I have no passion for house cleaning. One of the things I don’t mind doing, especially if I have a window, is washing dishes. This is why I rarely used a dishwasher, even when I had one. Debby and I used to argue over who had to do the dishes–I think that’s a natural teenage sibling thing. I remember those arguments best from the house we lived in just before she was married and moved out. (David and my father rarely did the dishes. Different times…)

After I became the only kid left at home, dishwashing was left mainly to Mother and me. I remember lots of evenings staring out the kitchen window of the last house I lived in with my parents, watching the street, the main road through our little town, and smiling when my friends or boyfriend drove by and blew their horns.

Now both my sister and I are content to be in suds up to our elbows, as my mother always was (she also rarely used a dishwasher other than her kids). I do a lot of thinking at the kitchen sink, and looking at this photo, I realize why my thoughts so often turn to people I care about. Just the items on the shelf over the sink and on the fence seen through the window evoke reminiscences of Tom, Lynne, Lisa S, Timmy, Paul, James, Tim, Jeff, my parents, Debby, Jess, Laura, Lindsey, and Rhonda–and Margot and Guinness. It’s a place of friends and family, as homes should be.

Last year during this time, Aaron and I were trading texts about his coming to stay here a few days during spring break. Tom and I were so happy he wanted to spend time with us, Tim, and the dogs, and I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.

So many memories…

Today is Riley’s birthday. How I’d love to call him and wish him a happy one. He’s another of the people I think about and miss deeply. The year 1980 was one of the most significant in our long history of friendship. I can remember the house I was living in then, and all the time he spent there, and how Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” LP stayed on my turntable almost constantly. There are so many pieces of Stevie Nicks’s “Sara” that tell a story of Riley and me. I’m sure lots of people feel the same way about the song for many different reasons–true of all the best songs, I think.

For Riley…

February Photo A Day: Upside Down

After checking today’s photo prompt, I planned to go outside to take photos of some roses so heavy on the branch that they’re hanging upside down. But it’s cold (for Houston), and after spending a night without heat and getting our furnace replaced today (Remember that thing about how I have art to sell???), I couldn’t seem to motivate myself to go back outside. That’s when I realized everything on my desk had been placed upside down from my perspective. And while reading is best done right side up, I have a bookmark that shows how reading is also hot from every angle.

Today, it’s all about heat. Thanks for the bookmark, ‘Nathan!

February Photo A Day: On Your Bedside Table

On my bedside table: a lamp, a coaster for water or coffee, and books, both electronic and old-school. I received the Neil Young memoir from Tim at Christmas, a great gift since I’m a longtime fan. That’s my Nook cover, and my current ebook is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables, which I’m loving (had never read it before). I wish I could go all fangirl and write him a letter of praise and gratitude, but I guess he didn’t leave a forwarding address.

February Photo A Day: Inside Your Fridge

I had just finished making the salad for tonight’s Craft Night dinner (ha, it’s takeout pizza, but at least I made a salad!) when I remembered what the challenge was for today’s photo. I always think other people’s refrigerator contents are a lot more intriguing than my own very basic stuff. Usually the bottom left drawer is full of fresh vegetables, but it’s time for a trip to the grocery store. My sister bought that bottle of wine (top shelf, left) in October. It still hasn’t been opened. Debby’s coming for a visit soon. Maybe we’ll finally uncork it!

February Photo A Day: Love Is…

…all you need.

When I woke up this morning and walked into the kitchen, I found a vase of flowers with a box of candy waiting for me. The candy had a little creature attached. His name tag says he is Cuddle, so I’ve named him Cuddle Russell (it was Russell Stover candy). I shot this photo of those gifts from Tom with the cross-stitch Marika crafted and sent me for Christmas. I’ve been saving it to share on this date. Its rustic frame generally matches one with a moose my mother stitched for me; “Love” will hang next to the moose.

I know there are Valentine’s Day haters and people who call it a Hallmark holiday, commercialized and designed to make alone people lonelier. I think it’s a day less about what you get than what you have–and if that doesn’t include a special someone, it must surely include the love of family, friends, neighbors, animal companions, a deity if you so believe–even the love you feel for nature, art, books…and the Beatles!

February Photo A Day: Where You Ate Lunch

I’m grateful for today’s challenge because I was drowning in files and paperwork and bills. Not only was I paying bills, but I’m separating all of 2012’s nonessential paperwork from the stuff I need for my taxes. I’m hoping by the end of this week, I’ll have everything to the accountant. Taxes are a little more complicated for joint filers when one is self-employed. I organize most things quarterly, but there will always be stuff I can do only after year’s end.

Anyway, I’d probably have forgotten all about lunch, except that I knew it was today’s challenge. So I forced myself to take a break for a BLT (Everybody say it with me: Mmmmm, bacon.), fresh pineapple and grapes, a glass of water, and a mug of green tea–all at my own dining room table. Now it’s back to work for me!
