Contemplating the anniversary

In a couple of weeks, it’ll have been a year since I began this Live Journal. Maybe I’ll do some sentimental recap about what I’ve learned or accomplished over that year. Or maybe I’ll talk about all the fantastic people I’ve come to know through Live Journal. I’ll try to say something profound to mark the occasion.

But I have to be honest. The thing that stays in my mind the most is the biggest disappointment that I’ve suffered through Live Journal, and it has lingered for nine months. People have had babies in nine months. They’ve gone through kindergarten/last year of high school/last year of college in nine months.

Chasing a dream

I am so happy for my friend Tandy. After 25 years in the corporate world, Tandy decided to focus on what work would make her feel truly fulfilled and happy. She wrote and published. She taught belly dancing. She became a partner, friend, and mentor to several people as they developed their entrepreneurial talents. As one of my clients, every time she came to me, I felt like I got as much or more from our sessions as Tandy. She coached other people on how to pursue their dreams.

When you have some time for yourself

Shawn and I seem to be checking out each other’s blogs/journals for goodies. The following is something I’ve meant to do for a while. For various reasons, last year was a difficult one for me. When I said that to Tim one night, he said, “But when was the last time you had a year you felt that way about?” When I thought about his question, it completely shifted my focus to how many really great years I’ve had since the last “bad year.” Since next year’s going to be a bit of a landmark for me (can you believe I’ll turn 35 AGAIN???), it’s a good time for reflection. If you need some of that, too, consider the following (and thanks, Shawn!):

Why we are not “like Will & Grace”

Famous Author Rob Byrnes brought the following snippet from Michael Musto’s column in The Village Voice to my attention:

In other gay-straight news, MELISSA DE LA CRUZ (The Au Pairs) and TOM DOLBY (The Trouble Boy) are editing an anthology of essays about the friendships between straight women and gay men. It’s been described as a literary Will & Grace.

Book reviews to the contrary, Tim and I are not like Will & Grace because: 1. Tim has a penis that works. and 2. I have a marriage that works. I guess that means an essay about us wouldn’t make it into the anthology.

P.S. I’m a little confused, because I thought Robert H. Hopcke and Laura Rafaty wrote this book in 1999 and titled it A Couple of Friends.
