After six years of use including countless dog naps and even serving as a dog playground–I’m looking at you, Pixie and Sugar–the quilt on our bed is in need of a bit of mending. It’s one of those projects I won’t get around to quickly enough to keep the threadbare places from proving irresistible to at least a couple of Compound canines who are into the, shall we say, fiber arts. So while Tim and I were out and about on Thursday, he spied a REALLY good deal on a quilt and shams that I liked, and presto!
Guinness and Margot think it’ll be okay once it gets some dog stink on it.
And a certain Miss Penny already bit it, so it’s officially part of The Compound now.
Tim was also helpful in directing Tom to exactly the rain barrel we wanted. It was at Whole Foods and was no more costly than the ones that weren’t quite right at Home Depot. Made by Epoch Solutions, it’s been repurposed and reconditioned from a container once used for olives. It has all the features we were looking for and is larger than even I’d hoped at 55 gallons. We’ve already begun putting our gray water in it, and it’s poised to begin collecting rain water from our roof when it rains again. And it WILL RAIN AGAIN. Dammit.
It is a great barrel, but what’s gray water?
In our case, waste water from dishwashing and bathing, which we’ll use to help water our plants. We also have a break in our gutters where we get a lot of rain runoff from our roof, so when it starts raining again, the barrel will catch that water. Lots more information online about gray water, because there are far more sophisticated systems for catching and distributing it. It’s non-potable.
our rain barrel was an actual barrel. My Dad said it once contained whiskey from Lynchburg, but the Christians were ahem … fond of it. I like your barrel!
Thanks. I hope our barrel helps preserve our yard.
oh and I love the quilt!
Thanks!
That’s a great quilt!
The cheapy quilt on our bed met a similar fate as yours–certain black dogs pulling the batting out as holes ‘magically’ appeared. I got a comforter to replace it, but during the day the old quilt goes on top so the new doesn’t meet the same fate.
Thanks!
My dogs were famous as bed linen destroyers. They magically stopped when they reached a certain age, which also coincided with Tim’s move to Houston, so I credited him. =) However, we have since had to go through Pixie’s chewing stage, and now Penny’s. I’m keeping an eye on that girl.
Nice Quilt!
I didn’t realize someone could be that fond of olives.
Thanks. And ha! Those kinds of barrels are used by wholesalers for olives and pickles and the like. Whole Foods has an olive bar, and there are still places where you can get pickles from a barrel. It’s nice they’re refitting them as rain barrels.
Sugar says she’s happy she could help contribute to a new quilt and the obvious brightening of your bedroom. You may thank her later.
I’ll thank her by hooking her up to the rain barrel on wheels as part of a new watering system.
