Beryl: Day 2

[Original post on this date: Still no power. Lots of tree debris. Structures, people, dogs are all well.]

Yard, patios, carport, roof–everything is covered with tree debris brought down by Beryl’s strong winds. We’ll have a mess to clean up when it stops raining. (After yesterday’s Beryl weather, today we had a big thunderstorm.) The two terrified dogs have had their meds to help them sleep through all this. The other two dogs aren’t happy, but they tend to take their cues from the “relaxed” dogs as well as from us, and Tom and I are staying as chill as we can…without air conditioning.

Houston’s electricity provider is doing a terrible job of communicating.

  1. Once upon a time of wired phones and power failures, those antiques of the past might have continued working since they were supposed to be on a separate power circuit.

Today (back then), those corporate overlords in their catered time-shares and yachts were (or still are) showing just how much they care.

But society traded the wired back for the wireless radio ga ga, and now there’s no backup. But that’s ok, right? The cable bill constantly begs me to pay even more for their VoIP “backup” phone “service” when the power goes out, despite the UPS on my end beeping away madly, the cable Internet “service” fails because the power is out. Good thing I didn’t fall for that ploy, and then the cell phone towers power off too…

    1. We were without power enough days that when it was restored, the Internet rebooted itself and came back seamlessly. Good thing. I had bills to pay so everybody in upper management and shareholders would be able to book their vacations in places where the weather was idyllic.
