This is the post that would have been published on Friday, May 17.
Current Photo Friday theme: In My Back Yard
This is what I saw when I opened my back door on Friday morning.
I’m very glad we had a tree crew at Houndstooth Hall last fall. Back then, the tree this limb fell from had so many lower-lying branches that it’s likely it would have done damage to our roof, also possibly breaking out windows, as well as taking out at least part of our fence and maybe done some roofing damage to our neighbor. Two limbs fell from the tree during the high winds of Thursday. The other limb is smaller; the photo is somewhat deceptive on this one–this is its leafy top and doesn’t show the length or circumference of the branch. Regardless, no harm done to any structures, and we were able to hire the neighbor’s tree crew on Friday to get both branches out of our back yard and taken away.
These are messed up power lines at the back of the yard. Two of them snapped, and each left their two ends hanging from power poles to the ground on opposite sides of our property. We were advised to stay 35 feet from all lines until Houston’s utility company could get to us. This meant every dog on the property had to be walked one at a time on leash, and one exit/entrance couldn’t be used at all.
We had a very short warning (less than five minutes) on Thursday evening. There were giant, fallen trees blocking nearby streets and resting on residential roofs. We were very fortunate.
More photos to come.
Less than five minutes isn’t much of a warning!
How fortuitous that you had previously had the tree crew do some work.
Again, I am glad you are all okay – and that no damage was done to the structures.
Thank you so much. Going back and reading your new comments through old posts is a great way to remember and reflect on the variety and abundance of life. You picked an ideal time to read and share your thoughts, as you have so many times through all these years. I think you’ve learned much about timing from your long association with the theatre. =) I wish my Director and Actor were living people–they’d enjoy knowing and working with you.
Also, Mom and I really want our neighborhood’s power and utilities underground. It’s not just the eyesore; it’s the lightning and heavy winds we don’t want fire and broken wires, well not by storms! Unfortunately, they can also cause fires and electrical device damages underground as well.
I’m not sure what the best alternative is. But strong winds and massive trees will always be the enemies of aboveground power lines.
Thankful for another inconvenience only. No damage. No injuries. Very thankful you have electricity again
I’m very grateful, too. Not that I plan to start cooking yet. I’m still playing catch-up.
Mom had the big tall and just outside the living room and kitchen corner cut down to the ground after a similar wind storm fairly near the same time. Those houses in yhe Broadmore region were storm and house casualties.
This was the evergreen that was home to many a squirrel and bird. Molly would bark her head off and chase them around the tree, the brick wall and into the Town of Mosaic.
Then one day Mamma Squirel must have had words with Molly, as for one season only, she was their protector was well as protecting us from the rodents.
I also shook paw with my finger with a squirrel from that tree. The get peanuts and pinecones while birds get birdseed from that tree.
We had a well shaded patio from that tree, as well as fresh oxygen and a you-are-not-in-a-city patio atmosphere.
That tree will be missed, and my parents are planning a new patio area with a smaller tree/shrubs.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to trees and all they provide us and their inhabitants.
