On this last day of Black History Month, I wanted to share two of my related Instagram posts. I was lucky enough to find a couple of dolls on one of my rare ventures into the world of retail. Both are from Mattel’s Inspiring Women Series (I think the only other doll I’ve acquired from this series is Eleanor Roosevelt).
The first is the Maya Angelou doll. What a talent and presence Ms. Angelou had. I really like that the doll is holding a copy of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
I did this coloring page with a quote from her.
The second doll celebrates one of my lifelong heroes, Rosa Parks. What a difference Ms. Parks made to the civil rights movement.
Here’s the coloring page I did with a quote from her.
Both of the coloring pages were taken from this book.
Oh, that’s interesting. Black History Month is October here. February is LGBT History Month.
In the U.S., February is Black History Month. March is Women’s History Month. June often receives presidential proclamations as LGBT or LGBTQ+ Pride Month. October is LGBT History Month. There are heritage months as well, celebrated at colleges and by various states.
I once worked for a company where there was a lot of groaning about any recognition of diversity, as if every month isn’t Patriarchy Month.
Rosa Parks doll and a book about her were Maia’s Christmas gift from me this past Christmas. Now she needs the Neville Brothers song…
Great gifts! I love that song. It always makes me think of card games with you, Craig, and Tom. I think I linked to the song once on my blog. I also love the memory of going to see the Neville Brothers with you and Tom after he and I moved to Houston. Great times!
