Probably anyone at any concert on the Freshen Up tour heard the same thing, but here’s one little story.
When the band finished a familiar song, Sir Paul’s chatter went something like this:
We know what you want to hear. When we play one you know, out come the phones. And when we play a new one, everything is dark. But we’re going to play a new one.
Then they played a new one, and I only wish my phone hadn’t been dying so I could have panned the entire stadium, which was enough to fill a fan’s throat with emotion. It just got lighter and lighter and lighter as the song went on.
We love him. And he’s not new at getting the response he wants from his audience.
One reason I relish these moments is because when I go to a concert, I get to see it through many eyes other than my own. My fictional characters, some of whom are musicians, and a couple of whom are brilliantly successful musicians, get to look at an arena as if they’re seeing it from their stage.
Having a writer’s multiple personalities makes life a lot of fun.
One of my favorite memories of New Orleans was when I saw Cindi Lauper with Scott. He was my best friend till I was 12 and then I moved, and he lived down the block when I was in NOLA … She played her new song off the Memphis album and then her old songs. I loved both, and the thing I love about her is that she is always doing something new and since I’ve been a fan since I was 14 I have come to trust her. I know there was a big thing about how she didn’t have the voice or the ability to fo classic country western or the blues and dang if she didn’t blow the doors off of both. Anyway, the 2nd half was all her old stuff … when she played GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN everyone in the placed was jumping up and down for the first verse, but then because we are old, we stopped because we were tired, however everyone was singing. I think that must be a great thing to have an auduence sing your words to you. I love fans
and by Cindi I mean Cyndi …. also it occurs to me that young Cyndi could not have done her latest two albums. Age is a good thing
Letter finished. Cried the entire time I wrote it… the good kind of cry
Thanks for reading and for all the responses.
