Photo Friday, No. 939

Current Photo Friday theme: Cinematic

I’ve shared this photo before, taken somewhere in the Texas Panhandle in 2014 when Timothy and I traveled from Houston to Colorado and back as part of a rescue animal transport. I kept telling Tim I was looking for “the last picture show,” and in this moment, I found that mood. I converted it to black and white and quoted from Larry McMurtry’s novel, later a movie, The Last Picture Show in my post back then.

I’ll post the McMurtry excerpt here, too.

Sometimes Sonny felt like he was the only human creature in the town. It was a bad feeling, and it usually came on him in the mornings early, when the streets were completely empty, the way they were one Saturday morning in late November. The night before Sonny had played his last game of football for Thalia High School, but it wasn’t that that made him feel so strange and alone. It was just the look of the town.

    1. Good memory. There was a moment after we parked and I took my photos that Trucks and Tumbleweed entered the chat. 😉 Wait. Doesn’t that sound like a country band? Or at least a country song. Trucks and Tumbleweed.

      1. Wow, I was right! This windy week affected the electricity a lot. There was one that involved, as an eyewitness accounted, a bird flying into the terminals of a transformer or capacitor on the pole. Both went bang and both went out with the lights!

There were various other flickers of lights and another prior to the bird that also knocked out the lights. A temporary fix was made, so that they could fix it properly the next day with the electricity off. All three ended up with computers taking the rest of the day off too.

It wasn’t until this morning after the parade that a tumbleweed strolled across the street in windy silence, just like your photos here.
