Current Photo Friday theme: Many
Many Pennys.
Created in 1963, and sold as late as 1970, by the Deluxe Reading/Topper Toy Company, the Penny Brite doll was intended to be a solution for parents who wanted their children to play with fashion dolls who looked younger than the dolls in the Mattel line. In 2007, Charisma Brands reintroduced the doll, along with additional outfits and a carrying case, for $69.95. I don’t know what her original price was, but likely in the three- to five-dollar range.
Interesting! I don’t remember these dolls, but I was immersed in the Mattel world back then. 🙂
Yes, I got my Penny doll after my first Barbies (which were a gift from a neighbor of her collection of Barbie and Ken dolls). I had no idea I’d be sitting here many decades later with more than 500 dolls in this house.
Bloody hell. I don’t have kids, so have no reason to know what dolls cost nowadays, but $70 seems a hell of a lot for a doll!
Barbie comes in a range of prices, from budget to collector range. But yes, I think $70 for a Penny Brite is ridiculous.
I think, like a lot of things, if people will pay it, the vendor will charge it.
I suspect not many people paid for it. I don’t think it’s on offer anymore.
