Photo Friday, No. 922

Current Photo Friday theme: Path

Shot at The Compound in December 2007 with my first digital camera, the Kodak Easyshare CX7430 Zoom.

When you’re overwhelmed by details, it can be easy to overlook the obvious. This little path was created when our previous home was being remodeled. Tom, the dogs, and I were staying in the garage apartment while the contractors worked inside the house. A blocked driveway created all kinds of challenges for dog management and access to the apartment. The solution came to me in the middle of the night, and I woke Tom when I said, “A house has two sides.” The next day, he cleared the never-used, overgrown, gated area along the “other” side of the house, and before sunset, he’d created this tidy, easy means to get to the back of the property.

    1. Thanks! I wonder if it’s still there. The person who bought the property from us cut down all the trees and cleared out all the flowerbeds. (He rents it out, so I imagine he wanted to have the least amount of upkeep possible). At least the house and apartment are still there, though he completely redid the interiors, which wasn’t a bad thing, especially in the garage apartment.

  1. That’s why a rectangular box has 7 sides. Grownups usually forget about that, but don’t worry, kids will remind you.

      1. There’s the topside, the bottomside, the 4wallssides, and then there’s the often ignored but kids (and cats and dogs) will find: the inside.

    1. Our property taxes were getting so high at The Compound that it felt like the house owned us. A lot of the things we loved most about Montrose were changing. Many businesses closed and were replaced by things with less character and charm. Too many people were moving in and too many mid-rise apartments and townhouses were going up to accommodate them. The infrastructure wasn’t designed for all that, and the traffic was terrible.

I house- and dog-sat for Lynne’s dogs and her son’s dogs one week. As I sat in her backyard and watched her dogs run and explore, I suddenly noticed, because of the way I was breathing, that I probably hadn’t been breathing that deeply and normally for a long time.

We needed more yard. At the time, we had two medium dogs and Tim had three big dogs, and they weren’t getting the kind of exercise they needed and deserved. I came home and told Tom we needed to consider a different home. We knew a good realtor, and he gave us a good agent as we began looking. That agent found our current home, which was exactly what we were looking for. Having more space in the yard was great, but having more space in the house was also an asset. We’ve never regretted it, even after we were flooded.
