I get to transport early on Thursdays because there are several things I need to do before we start loading animals. I happened to be at the front table when a dog named Canela was dropped off by her foster. I don’t always remember everything about every dog, but I did know that Canela was a mom who was leaving today, though her puppies can’t leave for a couple of more weeks so they can have all their necessary shots for travel. I noticed that Canela had a firm grip on her stuffed lamb, and I asked her if that’s her new baby. Of course she didn’t answer–that would have meant dropping her lamb!
Later, when volunteer Steve brought Canela to the photo/sticker table to finish her last steps before boarding the van, this is how she looked.
“Steve,” I begged, “can you please take Canela back to her crate and see if she left a toy in there? She really needs to travel with it.”
Because Steve is a great volunteer who always puts the animals first, he was happy to give her a little extra exercise time and indulge my request.
When they came back–well, doesn’t she look a lot happier with her baby? Steve and I walked her to the van together so we could tell the drivers to make sure she and her little lamb stayed together all the way to Colorado.
Happy life, Miss Canela!
