unchained melody – righteous brothers
A classic.
Also, isn’t life strange – moody blues
Bad Blood -Alison Mosshart
You Don’t Know Me – Anyone who sings it
You know, I heard that song all my life–esp the Ray Charles version–but for some reason, I really began to appreciate it when Meryl Streep sang it in Postcards from the Edge. Probably because it was such a vulnerable scene for her character. (I love Meryl.)
I love her singing I’m Checking Out in that movie…. LOVE IT! I am surprised more singers haven’t covered that – perfect country song
Amazing Grace
Does it make you think of the grandmother we never knew like it does me? I know that’s why Mother loved to hear you sing it. =)
Going Home from Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 and No One Is Alone from Sondheim’s Into The Woods.
No One Is Alone! Good one … I love that song
Interesting story was told about No One Is Alone at a recent gathering of the original cast members. The pre-Broadway tryouts for the musical were held in L.A. and the second act was lacking a strong song to pull it together. At the final rehearsal before the opening Sondheim came in sat down at the piano and began singing and playing the song. As it came to a close, his voice cracked and there were tears in his eyes. The same was true for the entire cast.
Great story. =)
And it’s because of you that I chose “Going Home” to be played at my mother’s memorial service in 2008. That music and those lyrics were as if written for her. Of course, now *I* cry whenever I hear it, too, but at least we cry together, you and I, even if many miles separate us.
Dvorak’s From The New World Symphony is the first symphony that was written in the United States and many people feel he captured the essense of Indian and Negro folk melodies in the composition. But Dvorak himself said that he used no Indian or Negro motifs in the work. That came about when someone supplied the Going Home lyrics to the largo section of the work.
Don’t Laugh at Me by Mark Wills
At least the video shows happy endings! Wish it could be that way more often, huh?
I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but that Coldplay song “Fix You” kills me.
Also, there is a Christmas song by Olivia Newton-John that does me in every December. “Christmas Never Felt Like This.” I don’t have kids and I’m not a mother, but that song makes me melt faster than Frosty the Snowman in July.
“Fix You”–sad, romantic, sad…
