Tradition

I don’t know about your house, but at The Compound, when we decorate, somebody has to supervise. Fortunately, Margot is always ready to step up.

Every group has its slackers.

However, even the slackers help out…

When they remember they brought cake to eat as a reward for hard work.

The next day, Tom unpacked the Barbie ornaments. Here are a handful.

And then…

And…

Then it was time for him to unpack the Star Trek ornaments. A smattering of ships.

That went on the Trek tree.

I was surprised to look up and see the Star Trek character ornaments had their own place.

And it’s not officially Christmas until Tim comes over…

And places all the angels (that many of you have contributed to painting and coloring through the years).

Thank you Tom, Tim, Rhonda, Lindsey (and Margot) for your efforts. Lindsey, I hear you’re sick with the flu and hope you’re feeling better soon. And a HUGE thank you to Lynne, who is the one who gave me most of those Barbie ornaments and Tom most of those Star Trek ornaments. You make Christmas wonderful.

    1. Isn’t that Santa’s line? Because last night I learned which writer’s secret identity is Santa. He IS a contributor to Foolish Hearts. I can’t say more.

  1. “it’s not Christmas till Tim comes over…” so sweet a sentiment … at my house it was “It’s not Christmas till Vicky cries.”

    1. This surely must be true of all families at holiday time. As long as SOMEONE cries, then you know you’re home.

We’ve lost the tradition of orangey photos that get processed in March and include someone’s thumb over a lens and no photos of the mother who did all the baking shopping wrapping cleaning cooking dishwashing planning thanking thinking. We shouldn’t give up everything.

  2. Aww.. I love all the photos and can’t wait to come by and see all the decorations. The angels are my fave.
And thank you for the well wishes. I’m doing better. Another couple of days and I’ll be good as new.

    1. I agree. I am grateful every year for the people in my life who are near and far. I can’t bear that there are lonely people on holidays. I understand some families get fractured beyond repair, but if it’s only stubbornness or foolish decades-old fights over things that really don’t matter, it’s just not worth holding on to grudges and anger.
