It’s a beautiful song, was always one of my favorites, and though there may be people who disagree, that line I used from it on Jeff’s panel (held by my mother and me in the first photo) seemed to me to be so true of Jeff. (Lots of back story there, as is usual with complex and gifted people.)
Our friend Nora (who was there the night we handed that quilt panel over to the NAMES Project–as a matter of fact, that’s Cleve Jones, the founder of the Quilt, who’s holding up the panel on the right in the second photo–he was visiting Houston for the event; a second panel was mailed in for Jeff by a family member, and the NAMES chapter here gave it to Nora to hand over so someone who knew him could)–ANYWAY–Nora later gave me a CD of Josh Groban singing the song. His version is beautiful, too.
Yes. He was a complicated person–don’t know if he would have mellowed as he aged or become a grumpy old man, but I sure would have liked to grow old knowing him.
My ultimate guitar goal is to learn to play that song exactly as did Don McLean.

Let me know when you’re playing it like DM!
Way, way too young.
