And without the inspiration of your post I would have never known … 1) that the black keys of a piano were originally carved from the wood of the ebony tree, 2) that it takes an ebony tree between 60 and 200 years to mature into a harvest-able commodity, 3) the average diameter of the ebony tree is only one-foot, 4) the demand for the wood is always greater than the supply and 5) ebonize is the method for making faux ebony from ordinary wood.
Yes, there are areas of the world where the poor ebony tree has been over-harvested. Let’s hope it makes a comeback.
