This is not one of my pictures, but one from an album of Tom’s family’s photos that Debby and I were looking through. I said, “Hey. Tom was hipster when hipster wasn’t cool.”
Debby said if this were a current-day photo I was putting on the Internet, someone would call Child Protective Services because “that child has a pipe in his mouth and he’s only three and a half.”
Oddly, Tom has never developed a tobacco habit. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Crazy Blogging Police.
i can see today’s parents dressing and posing their little boys just like this for a portrait. Tom is adorable.
That Gold Key comic book he’s holding retailed for twelve cents. Now it might sell for around fifteen dollars. Wouldn’t be a bad return on investment.
My first impression was totally Fred MacMurray sitcom dad circa 1960s. But it looks like the bubble pipes that were around when I was a kid.
Tom said his dad did smoke a pipe when he was little, but he agrees this could be a toy pipe.
Who would think that trying to look like my nerdy Dad back in the sixties would ever come off as hip?
Wait long enough, and everything old is new again, as the song says.
Very sweet! He has a good taste in comics too.
I agree!
Hipster Tom is adorable — and I am wondering in later comic years did he develop into a DC or a Marvel fan … or was he the rarest of the rare, and enjoyed both?
