….and THREE FORTUNES, a Rothko painting is featured predominantly in our novel. I have a wonderful book full of Rothko’s art that Tom gave me one Christmas, and he has asked which of Mark Rothko’s paintings belongs to the fictitious Godbee family. I have my preferences, but I think every reader should let it be whichever painting he or she imagines.
I was first introduced to Rothko’s work by my friend Steve R. at Houston’s Rothko Chapel. Ultimately, that’s where we had Steve’s memorial service, and Jeff’s service was there, as well. When Amy, Tom, and I worked at the NAMES Quilt in D.C. in 1996, we made a trip to the National Gallery of Art, where I got to see several of Rothko’s paintings. That Christmas, Amy surprised me with a very large framed print of one of my favorites, which has a place of honor at The Compound. Houston’s Menil Museum also has several Rothkos. Now and then when I need a creative boost, I go either to Rothko Chapel or the Menil.
And sometimes, we find Rothko prints in unexpected places. When Steve C. visited recently from San Diego, we spotted these at a hamburger restaurant, where I was indulged by Steve and Tom in my photo lust.
If you enjoy reading about the work and life of an artist, I recommend this biography as a good resource on Mark Rothko.
Beautiful paintings. I like art that can be different things to different people.
Very neat…very neat indeed.
