Runway Monday: The Final Challenge (PR 9:12)

Oh, Project Runway, you couldn’t cut me some slack on the last regular episode? No. You had the designers create a mini collection. They were sent to Governors Island in NYC to get inspiration from the landscape, architecture, and the sculpture installation by Mark di Suvero. Then they had to create a range of designs for three models to walk the runway. (And not to be a total bitch, but Josh, the word is “artillery,” not “artillirary.” Just sayin’.)

The show failed to send a G6 to take me to Governors Island, so I went to the Houston studio space of Texas artist David Adickes to get another look at his tree sculptures. Here are some of the photos I shot there.

I then selected my models. In the order you’ll see them, I designed for Rusty, Maia, and Sharon, with casual, daytime formal, and evening formal looks. The solid fabrics for all three designs are of Dupioni silk, with a high-quality cotton fabric evocative of Adickes’ trees used for Rusty’s halter top, Maia’s belt, and Sharon’s bodice. Rusty’s beaded belt and Maia’s jewelry are my designs. Shoes are by Mattel. Enjoy!

I’m not sure if I’ll have another post before my final collection, but at some point soon, I’ll see you on the runway!

  1. artilliary is the English spelling/pronounce of Webster’s (the idiot) spelling of artillery, and getting that i-a vowel combination can be quite daunting in ‘ey ooked one foniks sort of way. So, I think that extra r must really be necessary and that the dictionary needs to be updated, because everyone else is obviously wrong.

You can decide who is really right or who was right first. But, it’s things like this that held me back a grade when we moved back to the United States from England. After being compelled for five years to spell in England’s English ways, we (my brother and I) were sentenced to serve a lifetime of misspellings, a crime we didn’t commit. But, that’s what spell-checker is four.

    1. Josh added syllables and made it wrong no matter which variant he was using: his was ar-till-er-rary, not ar-till-ery or ar-till-yury. Keep in mind this is the same person who had no idea what Tim Gunn was saying when he said to Josh, “Qu’est-ce que c’est?” And while there’s no shame in ignorance–we all have to learn–since Josh is so quick to belittle and mock other people for what he perceives as their flaws and shortcomings, I think he needs someone to take him down a peg or two.

  2. You have three great looks, Becky! I think the white one is my favorite. The blue necklace is the perfect touch.

Once again, no one on the show really wowed me this week. I was torn between whether Laura or Kimberly would go home. I think Laura’s emotional plea to stay sealed her fate. I’m curious to see who will go to Fashion Week. My money is on Victor, Josh and Anya, but I think I would rather see Kimberly more than Victor or Josh. I think the win will come down to Anya and Victor.

    1. Thanks, Gary; the white is my favorite, too.

Aren’t all four of them going to Fashion Week? Do you think there’ll be another elimination? I agree with you that the way things are now, the contest is between Victor and Anya. But with some extra time to put collections together, Kimberly might surprise us; Josh has a shot only if he EDITS himself, but I suspect with more time, he’ll get more chances to create hot messes.

      1. I’m pretty sure the preview implied that they would eliminate one more this week after the home visits and their returns to NYC, because at one point Josh says, “For one of us it is over today.”

I was an Anthony Ryan fan from the beginning and really hoped he would make it to top three. He is still #1 fan favorite on PR’s website with 52% of the votes followed by Anya with 42%.

        1. I probably couldn’t hear the previews over my own voice bitching about Josh!

I loved Anthony Ryan, too. Although I didn’t always think his designs were the best, I usually thought there were others whose work was worse. Some of the eliminations made no sense to me, but I always have to remind myself that the judges can see flaws in the work in person that aren’t as visible to me via cameras.

          1. But I agree that several times, watching their discussions, they’d all be saying negative things about Every aspect of one designer’s work, then send someone else home. I didn’t get it.
            Oh
            and also?
I agree that your mini collection looks great!

  3. Rusty and Sharon’s tops are a lovely design.

I love David Adickes’ trees – initially I thought the first tree was much smaller in scale and the ‘leaves’ made of paper.

    1. Thank you! =)

Yes, the trees look deceptively light and flowy. Then when you get closer to them, you can see what sturdy materials they’re made from.
