On Bravo’s Project Runway, the designers were taken to a rooftop where they were presented with several hybrid Saturns. Once the car doors were opened, the designers had to grab as many of the materials used in the construction of the cars as they could. They were told to come up with an innovative design that incorporated these reusable materials.
Heidi Gunn, who is currently in evacuation mode thanks to Hurricane Gustav, gave the LJ Runway Monday designers the same challenge. Here’s how I dressed Summer.
Summer steps onto the runway in her new cocktail dress. The design uses a lightweight sueded upholstery fabric and cargo bay netting, with the cropped bodice using broken reflector lights as a trim.
The fabric has a bit of elasticity, giving it movement, and the netting keeps it from being too warm to be wearable.
Summer always likes designs that show off her tiny waist.
The skirt has a single seam up the back, with a small slit at the bottom to allow free movement of her legs.
Close-up view of the back, with little red buttons repeating the color of the trim.
“I never needed plastic surgery to make me look good,” Summer said, possibly referring to a recent incident with Mattel Top Model Figaro Fonta’int.
As always, Summer has a pair of shoes to match her dress. She also asked for a purse large enough to hold her composite cards, since she planned to wear the entire ensemble to drinks with some agent named Nora who’s interested in wooing her away from her current agency.
The total look:
You can see markgharris‘s design for Figaro (who currently looks a lot like Summer) right here, and timothyjlambert‘s design for Nikki here. You can read the judges exchanging snark and praise on Heidi Gunn’s post right here.
If you’re interested in my previous weeks’ designs:
Week 6: It’s a Drag! I won!
Week 5: Lipstick Jungle
Week 4: Olympic Gold
Week 3: New Orleans Inspiration
Week 2: Going Green I won!
Week 1: Grocery Store
I think that’s really cool. Imaginitive use of materials, GREAT color palatte, and I could see this on a real runway (did I just say that? Is this not real?) in a minute. No violations here; move along, ma’am. : )
Thank you. I’m very much looking forward to your design. (And did you catch the reference to “Nora?”)
Yes! I admit I’m a little frightened for my doll.
This is my favorite one of yours thus far, Becky! As always LOVE the shoes… and the purse!
Thanks, Gary!
The attention to detail in this design is truly impressive, and I think the colors look great together. But where on earth did you find the materials?
Thank you!
Tim said we all got our materials from inside a 1981 Yugo. That’s his story and I’m sticking to it.
ummm, weren’t 1981 Yugo’s more colorful?
Ask Tim. I’m not even sure I was born then.
Where, I ask you, WHERE are my exclamation marks?
I gave you two. =0)
Thank you.
I’m sorry!!!! I’m sorry!!!! Here!!!!! Here!!!!! And here’s some more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone knows you do the best accessories!!!! And, like they say, a girl can never have too many handbags and shoes!!!!!! (Especialy if they were made by Becky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Wow. That’s a lot of exclamation. I like it. Thank you.
That dress is sharp!
I love the shoes, too! (and the purse, and….)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Way cute design.
Thanks!
I have just finished reading three months worth of back posts of your Lj my dear. I can definitely see the need for a bit of Project Runway fun. I love this weeks look, and the Going Green look is FABULOUS ! It all makes me smile.
Hope upon hope I will be around more to keep up and not have to catch up on three months worth of Becky-Goodness again. 😉
I need to find time to check out Figaro and Nikki now.
Oh, yes, you MUST check out Figaro and Nikki. They are fabulous. Okay, Nikki is fabulous, and Figaro is…shall we say…interesting?
The best is yet to come!
(And yeah, this has been a fantastic diversion for me. It makes me so happy that it makes you smile, too, because your happy summer has made me happy!)
I like the creative use of materials, but the reflectors look like they could cut someone. Good thing you chose the red ones, then.
The slutty, slutty, slutty exposed midriff makes me think Original!Summer’s going out for a night on the town. Why? Because any time we ask you guys where your model would go in such an outfit, you always say “a night on the town.” Once, just once, could you send them to a library or the museum? Oh. Right. Nevermind.
While being photographed outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on today’s Holiday Monday, Mattel Top Models Summer and Nikki drew the attention of relentless celeb stalker Lola Listeria.
“C’mon,” the columnist begged, “you can tell Lola. You’re in the neighborhood for a meeting with Super Agent Nora, right?”
With a sniff of disdain, Summer said, “We’re here for the Koons exhibit. Jeff Koons On the Roof.“
“He’s so whimsical,” Nikki added, digging into her Muppet Bag and tossing Lola a twenty dollar bill. “Buy yourself a ticket. Or Summer will cut you with her dress.”
The steps!
The very ones.
Very nice…
Do either of fashion divas have Top Model Barbie. I saw her today and she is a knock-out. If anyone wants her I’ll be happy to go to that store tomorrow and see if she is still there.
They also had some crays expensive Barble designed by an Asian designer, who’s name wont come to me right now. SHe was dressed in jeans and trendy tops & accessories…
crays expensive Barbel….
crazy expensive Barbie for those that can’t read my typing….
I could read it. I need the Top Model Barbie. Let’s talk.
Definitely a hit, Becky. I would wear it myself — if I had a tiny waist!
Thank you! I think cargo bay netting is the wave of the future.
I really like this! Maybe not the scary sharp and pointy reflectors, but I love that color on a redhead and the hang of it all. Sort of conservative but sexy. I’ve got to take a closer look at Tim’s, but I can’t imagine it’s really better than this :).
Thank you, Mary. Tim has clearly paid off the judges from his vast wealth hidden in the Cayman Islands.
Or maybe he uses sexual favors. Surely that’s it.
It has to be SOMETHING. I refuse to believe it’s really his fabulous designs.
(I’m SO BITTER that he can do sleeves and pants and I can’t. Yet.)
