What does Colorado do with all these dogs you guys keep sending up there? And which state is next in line when Colorado is full? Do you know how many have been sent up to CO since it all began?
They find adoptive homes! We work with lots of different groups, and so far, they keep asking for more. Colorado has more than 5 million people. We’ve sent over 7,000 dogs and cats. There are other states with good spay and neuter laws who take in homeless animals not just from us, but from all over the South/Southwest. They don’t want backyard breeders and disreputable pet stores to spring up in their states to produce the dogs and cats people want. They’d rather have all the amazing dogs and cats already born who just need homes. Simple case of supply and demand.
My real dream is when Houston doesn’t have them to send, because we, too, have spay and neuter laws. Our goal is to be put out of business (though it’s not a business in the sense of profit–RPM is a not-for-profit organization).
Does RPM lobby for spay and neuter laws in Houston/TX?
They definitely support the concept! And have a cooperative relationship with several organizations that offer low cost spay and neuter or trap/neuter (or spay)/release for feral cats.
But changing Texas law in this regard is excruciatingly slow. I was just reading last night in one large Texas city (not Houston or Dallas) how animal cruelty/abuse is almost never prosecuted. It’s crazy.
