THANK YOU!

This is Freida. You’ll see a few more photos of her before she leaves for Colorado on Thursday. Freida is terrified of noisy places, crates, and cages, so she was really happy that Flint made his trip to Colorado last week so she could have a place to be her happy self for a few days at Houndstooth Hall before she travels, too. She has been SO MUCH FUN, playing with Anime and Lynne’s dogs Minute and Paco. She’s a really good girl, and thanks to a transporter, she got her ride out of BARC so we could foster her just hours before she was scheduled to be euthanized.

Freida reminds me of why so many people are working tirelessly to improve the save rate of Houston’s homeless pets. She also reminds me that I need to say thank you because at this moment, I’m at 101% of my fundraising goal for the 2015 Savings Pets Challenge. The challenge [link redacted after campaign ended] continues until Friday, June 5th at 1:59:59 pm ET, and believe me when I say that ANY amount is welcome, so don’t feel shy if you want to give five dollars or five thousand (heh!). (Freida says $5 buys FOOD and she LOVES FOOD!)

  1. I’m sorry I missed the fundraising deadline by a month! Do you know why there are so many homeless dogs in Texas?

    1. There are a lot of reasons in Houston. We have a year-round breeding season because of our climate. We don’t have spay and neuter laws. It’s a cultural thing (across the South, too, not just here) of resistance to spaying and neutering. Houston has a leash law, and pets are not supposed to roam free, but it’s ignored in many areas, and since dogs aren’t inside or in a fence, and aren’t spayed and neutered, they constantly produce more offspring.

      These numbers are daunting:

In six years, one unspayed female dog and her unspayed offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs.

One unspayed female cat and one unneutered male cat and their offspring can result in 420,000 kittens in 7 years.

A female cat can have 29 litters in 10 years.

A male cat can sire as many as 2,500 kittens in a single year, and a male dog can sire almost as many puppies.

      1. Madness. I don’t think there are spaying or neuter laws here, come to think of it, though it is encouraged. We has Scruff and Poppy ‘done’ early on. It was a no-brainer.
