Spotted on The Compound

“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

  1. It IS a sin to kill a mocking bird! And they’re always welcome to drop in for some seed. I like to sit in the yard under the trees and make up bird songs for them to imitate.

      1. I did listen to it, and it was like a little bit of summer. Thanks for adding it to your post. I’ve also noticed that mocking birds around here try to find highest spot in the area to do their singing. This is the top of one of the tall posts that carry the electrical lines down the street in the front.

  2. Mockingbirds do not have songs of their own. They mimic those of other birds. Also? They’re mean as hell. They’re dirty, dirty song thieves that want nothing more than to peck your eyes out. Mockingbirds are the state bird of Texas. There is no correlation between the two sets of facts. 🙂

    1. Texas mockingbirds must be inferior. Our mockingbirds back home do have their own songs, they just incorporate other songs and sounds into theirs. Sampling, if you will.

However, our Southern mockingbirds also have a bad reputation like the Texan variety–most often compared to those quarrelsome bluejays.

  3. as she did with squirrels at Green Acres, Minute tried to climb a tree after a mockingbird at our new house. she is very happy to have trees and critters again.

i like mockingbirds – as long as you are not near their nests they won’t bother you, the dog, the cat or whatever… Just don’t mess with the nest!

    1. It’s always so strange to think of the things I take for granted not being everywhere. Of course–no kangaroos here!
