I often wonder about last names. What is the relationship between the ‘rane’s and the ‘rum’s? Or what is a ‘coch’?

    • Becky says:

“Coch” is a Welsh word meaning red or crimson. There are many derivatives of Cochrane, including Cockram, and I imagine another spelling of that is Cochrum.

We used to laugh at all the ways our name would be called out (in waiting rooms, for example), and Cochrum was a frequent mispronunciation.
