Legacy Writing 365:76

Remember how I said that our dog Pete liked a few people and didn’t like others? Tom’s brother Jeff was one of the people he liked. And it went beyond just tolerating him. He never minded if Jeff picked him up, held him, played with him. They were buddies.

Christmas of 1997, the Tom family all traveled to Houston to be with us, which was very generous of them. I took this photo of Pete and Stevie flanking Jeff in Tom’s old recliner.

I shared the photo with some of my online friends to prove that Pete could be a good dog. He could! Most of them were skeptical, but a couple of years later, our friend Steve C decided on his first Houston visit that anything Jeff could do, Steve could do, too.

No one was bitten that visit. Except maybe Jim’s boots.

  1. Oh, weinies! Trixie was a bit of a pistol too. I love the pic of them looking at the camera, they are so cute with those bright eyes…

  2. Mlle. Renee is not very welcoming to people who walk up to the house. But if they pull into the driveway in a car, the minute they get out she runs around to the back door and knocks on it to get in the house and to the front door so she can be sitting in front of the door when I open it. Then you’re expected to kneel down so she can look you in the face while you scratch behind her ears and tell her what a wonderful girl she is. Not that she’s spoiled or anything.

  3. Those two dogs absolutely loved Jeff… Look at them just napping in his lap!

Stevie was a very loving dog. Pete on the other hand… That dog was mean in his old age and made his mind up about people in about two seconds flat! You were either against him, or him against you… Or both. For some reason he didn’t give a rat’s ass about me either way… I was off his radar. Apparently there were bigger fish to fry!

That picture of me with the two dogs was actually a 15 hour photo shoot to get that single picture!

    1. Ha–I DO have more pictures from that “photo shoot,” though it’s true it was long. But I didn’t make you miss your flight or anything, so there’s that.

Tim was Pete’s “bigger fish to fry” that visit, wasn’t he? Good thing Stevie gave him lots of love, because Pete…did not.

      1. my recollection is that Pete’s focus shifted a bit that visit… from my boots to Steve, upon Steve’s arrival… and then from Steve to Tim upon Tim’s arrival… that once Tim got there, Pete would gaze adoringly at Steve. So fickle.

  4. Jim is 100% correct now that I think of it! Once Tim arrived he was the new target. Towards the end of that visit Pete would even ask to sit on my lap (albeit only for a few minutes at a time). He was fickle but I was glad he warmed up to me!

    1. You are overdue for a visit. You’ve been photographed with all The Compound dogs except Pixie and Penny. They’re waiting….
